Welcome Message from the School Counselor
Welcome to Mrs. Troiano’s school counseling website! This is my 21st year working in Newark Public Schools and my 3rd year as a school counselor with the Salomé Ureña family. I completed my undergraduate studies in Elementary Education at the University of Scranton and earned a Master’s Degree in Counseling from Montclair State University. I am super excited about my latest adventure, yoga training! I have recently earned a certificate in Trauma-Informed Yoga for Youth and plan to bring mindful practices to students.
As a Salomé Star, I am happier than ever. I love the students, staff and community here at SU. I have the joy of working with students through classroom guidance lessons, small group counseling, and individual counseling. I also collaborate with school staff and parents in order to best meet the needs of students. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call or email me.
School Counseling Services
Classroom Guidance Lessons
I visit each classroom multiple times throughout the week and have the opportunity to interact with students during these lessons. Lessons typically last 30-40 minutes in length and cover topics such as social emotional learning, character education, school readiness skills, understanding feelings of self and others, problem solving skills, friendship skills, study skills and more.
Small Group Counseling
A variety of small groups are offered to students who may benefit from spending additional time developing academic, social, or emotional skills along with their peers, and to students who are coping with similar life situations. Groups can have anywhere from 3-12 members and usually meet once a week for several weeks.
Individual Counseling
Some students can benefit from one-on-one counseling regarding academic, social, or emotional challenges. Individual counseling usually takes place 1-2x weekly and referrals can be made through students, teachers, or parent/guardian.
School Counseling Initiatives/Events
Service Learning/Community Exchange Service-learning refers to learning that actively involves students in a wide range of experiences, which often benefit others and the community, while also advancing curriculum goals. Community-based service activities are paired with structured preparation and student reflection. Each month, students will have an opportunity to participate in various projects to develop civic engagement skills and gain important experience working with diverse members of the community.
