Required Sequence of Studies
Each North Penn student is required to take a full year of Social Studies during their high school careers.
10th grade: American History
11th grade: World History
12th grade: Government
Semester Elective Courses
College-Level Electives (Advanced Placement / Dual Enrollment)
The principle goal of all social studies courses is to develop the mastery of 21st century skills such as critical reading, using and evaluating sources, synthesizing information, and developing arguments. Through the study of human behavior, history, and the social environment, each social studies course which builds upon skills in order to help students become knowledgeable and capable citizens of the United States and the world. knowledgeable and capable citizens of the United States and the world. To achieve these goals, there are three required courses and a variety of elective courses. In grade 10, the emphasis is on the study of America in History. In grade 11, the emphasis is on the study of World History. In grade 12, students will complete a semester of Government and choose a semester elective based upon their interests. Social studies courses and choice options aim to bolster student’s desire to achieve, while preparing students for post-secondary education. Students must earn a minimum of four (4) credits in grades 9-12, but they are encouraged to take additional social studies credits to expand their knowledge of people and the social environment in which they live.
All course offerings are available at the 5.0 and 6.0 levels - with many Advanced Placement offerings as well. The Social Studies department believes that the research process is an important part of the learning process. Therefore, research and writing are an integral part of the Social Studies department curriculum. he level 4.0 course, students learn the practical side of research, reading, and writing,. In level 5.0 and 6.0 courses, students are required to complete formal writing based upon course content and a research project, which involves formulating a thesis, following a process for gathering and reporting data, and reaching conclusions. All students are required to complete research as part of their social studies coursework. Courses at the 6.0 level are more advanced and require more independent reading, writing, and analysis. Several courses are also offered as part of the College Board’s Advanced Placement (AP) Program. Although individual universities determine how to award credit, AP is a program of college-level courses and exams that gives high school students the opportunity to receive advanced placement and/or credit in college. As a result, it is recommended that students enrolling in 6.0 or AP level courses also schedule 6.0 or AP level English courses.
STUDENTS ENROLLED IN ALL AP SOCIAL STUDIES CLASSES WILL BE REQUIRED TO COMPLETE SUMMER ASSIGNMENTS. These assignments are expected to be completed by the first day of class.
