Lessons:
Strings classes take place twice per week during the school day for 30 minutes. Lesson times rotate so that students do not always have lessons at the same time each day.
Lesson days will be Monday and Thursday at Montgomery; Lesson days will take place on two of the following days at Gwyn Nor: Tuesday/Wednesday/Friday.
Students leave class with their regular teacher to attend strings in a small group. Students are held responsible for their own schedule and attendance, as well as any make up work assigned by the classroom teacher.
Parent encouragement:
Students will need encouragement from their adults at home in order to be successful. Your child should practice daily and show you what they are learning!
Encourage your child to play their instrument for other friends and relatives over the phone or on video calls.
Home practice is necessary for your child to be successful on their instrument. Your child will always have homework from strings class. This means your child should be practicing at home most days of the week. 10-15 minutes a day is a great start!
Instruments:
Select from violin, viola, or cello. Bass will be available to returning students in grades 4-6 (meaning that your child must start on another string instrument first).
Instruments can be rented through Zeswitz Music starting at $40 per month. Rentals include maintenance, repairs, size exchanges, and even complete replacements if the instrument cannot be repaired. We recommend that all beginners rent an instrument. Your rental payments go towards eventual ownership of a full-sized instrument!
Most beginners start in a child-sized instrument. See the chart below to measure your child before renting the instrument.
Zeswitz offers 2 levels of instruments - "Enhanced" and "Deluxe." You can read more about them from Zeswitz when you sign up. Both are acceptable for strings class.
If you are thinking about purchasing an instrument for your beginner, PLEASE check with your teacher before purchasing! Many instruments can be purchased cheaply online, but these instruments are not suitable for strings class. They have a scratchy or metallic tone, they do not stay in tune, and they will cause your child much frustration, potentially discouraging them from playing. We want your child to have the best possible start, and the best way to do that is to rent a high quality instrument.
Definitely do not purchase any colorful, painted instruments. These are fun to look at, but they are usually poor quality and not suitable for strings class.
If you are NOT renting from Zeswitz Music (providing your own instrument or purchasing one), please contact Mrs. Hoffman to check for size and playability as soon as possible.
If you need financial assistance, we have scholarship instruments that can be loaned to students for free! Contact your teacher with your request.
