Four new spelling words and one optional bonus word will be taught each day in our classroom. These words will be on the next day's spelling test, along with three words from the previous day of our study. Each day's test will also include three phonograms (most often they will be multiple-letter phonograms tied to the words from the lesson). Be sure to study/review the spelling words and phonogram cards with your child on a regular basis. Spelling words will be posted here at least one week ahead. Spelling words will be posted here for your reference each week.

Look at the bottom of the page for common spelling rules that are used in our spelling and grammar lessons.
The "Silent Final E" Rules:
1. vce rule 1 (the villainous e): vowel saying its name sound, followed by a consonant, ending in a silent e; example: take
2. vu rule 2 (the friendly e): words that end with a v or a u followed by a silent e (since English words do not end in v or u); examples: glue, give
3. cg rule 3 (the magician e): words that have a c or g before the silent e where they say /s/ or /j/ sounds; examples: since, range
4. need 1 more rule 4 (the superhero e): words where the silent final e is the only vowel in the syllable (English syllables must have a vowel); example: little (lit tle)
5. no job e (the old curmudgeon e): words where the silent final e does not have a job (no reason to be there; just has always been and does like change); example: measure
There are also these rules (which come up a lot more often in grammar and spelling), for adding vowel suffixes such as -ed and -es:
1-1-1 rule: if the word is 1 syllable and ends with 1 vowel saying its first sound and 1 consonant, double the consonant; examples: swimming, stopped
y to i rule: if the word ends with a consonant and a y, change the y to an i to add the suffix; examples: flies, dried
drop the e: if the word ends with a silent final e, drop the e to add the suffix; examples: driving
