Welcome Musicians!
Hello folks! My name is Laura Swarce, but your students know me as Ms. Swarce. This is my first year in the Nottingham School District, and I am so excited to be a part of your lovely community. Throughout your students' musical education, my goal is for each of them to understand and feel confident in their unique talents as music makers.
Beginning in Grades K-2, students will learn to be "tuneful, beatful, and artful," which means that they will be able to sing in tune with healthy vocal use, to keep a steady rhythm using different parts of their body, and to connect with music on a deeper, more emotional level. We will sing folk tunes, participate in choreographed dances, and listen to musical stories throughout the year!
In Grades 3-4, students will continue on their musical journey by learning about various musicians in history, from Beethoven to Ella Fitzgerald to The Beatles to Stevie Wonder. Students will learn how to handle instruments such as the recorder, the ukulele, and mallets responsibly and carefully. Students will also begin reading, writing, and creating musical notation.
Finally, in Grades 5-8, students will use their musical tools from K-4 to create their own musical compositions and use more advanced musical instruments, such as the piano, guitar, and drum kit. We will continue to learn about important musical figures in our history and present while considering the impact that music has on our lives and society.
Outside of the school day, Nottingham Music also runs a Choir and Band for students looking to advance their musical knowledge. Check it out here!
About Me:
I grew up on the South Shore of Massachusetts but moved to New Hampshire to attend college at UNH. Since then, I have fallen in love with the New Hampshire scenery and decided to stay up here for good!
I graduated from UNH with a Bachelor's of Music and, recently, a Master's of Education. During my undergrad, I participated in many different ensembles on various instruments, including cello, saxophone, trombone, percussion, and voice!
Outside of teaching, I love swimming, going on hikes, and hanging out with my cat, Iris!
