Phonics/ Phonemic Awareness
Phonics is the skill of reading and writing words based on patterns.
We start by learning letter names and sounds. After the first vowel is introduced, we begin to learn how to read words that use the letters we have introduced. These words follow a VC (vowel-consonant) or CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) pattern to start. Our letter and phonics sequence is included below.
Phonemic Awareness is the ability to work with sounds in your mind.
A phoneme is a sound. When we read, we blend phonemes together. When we write, we break a word into its phonemes. In addition to blending and breaking words into phonemes, we also isolate, add, delete, and change phonemes. These skills help us to become secure readers and writers.
