Photography

Course Expectation

Course Objective:

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the basics of digital photography and alternative photographic processes. Students will learn technical considerations unique to photographic manipulation: aperture, shutter speed, ISO, exposure, photographic editing software and various forms of output and final image presentation. Emphasis will be placed on creating images that explore the principles of art and elements of 2-D design. Students will also learn about the history and impact of photography and the personal/familial. Enrolled students will be responsible for providing their own working digital camera (cellphone cameras are perfectly acceptable), personal memory cards, batteries and USB/portable digital storage device: special circumstances will be taken into consideration. NHS Library also has cameras that you can check out as well. Each week, OUTSIDE of class time, students are expected to take 20-30 images (on average) exploring a particular theme. This course is only available for Juniors and Seniors. This course aligns with the Massachusetts State Curriculum Frameworks for Extended study in Visual Arts.

Cellphone Policy:

Students will not be allowed to have cell phones out during class! The only times cell phones will be allowed is when directed by the teacher. I will indicate these times during class time. These times may be during demonstrations, to document work, or instructions. There is absolutely no texting during class. Students will not be able to use phones to listen to music. If you cannot follow these instructions you will be required to place your phone in an assigned classroom pocket in a cell phone wall hanging organizer during class for the remainder of the term; at the beginning of the next term we will reexamine your ability to have your cell phone on your person during class.

Behavioral Expectations:

Our classroom is a community and as such I expect all students to treat each other with kindness and respect. Everyone should feel comfortable to speak freely, share their ideas, and ask questions without fear of judgment. All students are expected to participate in classroom discussion, take initiative in learning, and to meet the expectations of the course requirements. All students are expected to arrive to class on time and stay until class is over.

Work Expectations:

Half of the work in this class is to take the photographs!!! You are expected to take these photographs OUTSIDE of class time. You are expected to upload your images (whether your are using your smartphone or a digital camera) to your school Google Drive or another online storage system, like Dropbox. This is necessary because the connectivity for smartphones are poor in school. Class time should not be wasted waiting for you to upload your images. Your class time will be dedicated to introductions of assignments, demonstrations and the editing of your final images.

Supplies:

All students must obtain a sketchbook at least 9x12 in measurement. If you need assistance getting a sketchbook please come speak to me.
