The home team will provide 2 volunteers to sit at a table behind home plate, one to keep the official scorebook and official pitchcount.
Both home and away teams will need to provide 3-4 additional volunteers per game to fullfill the following roles: scorebook, pitch count, protest committee, and field prep. (the number is 3-4 as scorebook/pitch count may be combined)
To confirm, the recommendation from the league is that home teams have two volunteers both keeping scorebooks: one with the official book and another to help resolve any potential disputes.
Below are descriptions for volunteer jobs that we have filled in the past at VT Cal Ripken tournaments
Record the official details of the game, i.e. keep the book. This will include substitutions. It would be helpful if the person had some past experience scoring a baseball game.
This person monitors and records the number of pitches thrown by each pitcher. Most coaches will check in with the pitch counter after each inning to make sure that they have the same number as the pitch counter. An easy but hugely important job since tournaments have pitching limits to protect the arms of kids and ensure the integrity of the game. Teams forfeit the game if they violate the pitch count, since it would be using an ineligible player.
This one is easy. You just have to watch the game. You will convene with other committee members, including the Tournament Director, if a dispute arises. This almost never happens, and, when it does, the parents generally defer to the judgment of the Tournament Director. Familiarity with baseball and paying attention to the game are required.
The tournament commissioner has asked that we are available to help with field prep after games - bringing some rakes/drags, helping to rake/drag and reline fields as needed.
The announcer, if we have one, simply uses a bull horn to announce the name of the batters. It can be fun!
The tournament may require four temporary outfield fences be put up at Maxfield in Hartford prior to the tournament. Many hands make light work. The ability to unroll a fence or swing a sledgehammer in the sun is helpful!! Good job for people who like to work outside.
