Sixth graders are challenged at the beginning of the year to accept the 40 Book Challenge. The goal is to read 40 books by the end of the school year. Breaking it down even further means 10 books each nine weeks. This challenge is meant to encourage a love of reading through a healthy dose of competition. Who can read the most books by the end of the school year?
Students will prepare and give a book talk to me during class or Study Hall. This is a 1-2 minute commerical that shows students read and understood the book. Students keep track of their titles in their Reader's Notebook and once they hit 10 books read, I will add their names to our Reading Wall of Fame in the 25% Club. Students will move their names as they progress through books.
Successful completion of this challenge is NOT part of their ELA grade. BUT what is a part of their ELA grade is proving mastery of our 6th Grade Ohio Learning Standards-RL.6.10 and RI.6.10:
By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature: including stories, dramas, and poems, and literary nonfiction in the grades 6-8 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range. Build background knowledge and activate prior knowledge in order to make text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world connections that deepen understanding of the text.
The OverDrive app allows students to access 1000s of ebooks, audio books, magazines etc. for free. All it takes is a library card. Once OverDrive is linked to your library card, students can browse the Clevnet site to download titles. If you send in your library card and pin I will gladly help your child get this set up on their devices.
