Dear families:

We all know how important it is to read with your child, but here are a few points regarding the importance of reading from a Speech-Language Pathologist’s perspective:

Reading to your preschool-aged child helps promote speech and language skills in several ways:

First, reading to your child reinforces the sounds (or phonemes) that form words. By reading aloud, you provide a model of accurate sound production for your child to imitate.

Reading also helps expand your child’s vocabulary by exposing them to words they may not otherwise learn. Expanded vocabulary leads to better and more complete language processing skills as your child develops.

Lastly, reading with your child promotes social language development. By learning how characters interact with each other your child will develop a social language framework that he/she may draw upon during social interactions with peers.

These are just a few of the many reasons why reading with your child is important.

Happy reading, everyone!
