what is song form???

FORM is the Basic Structure of a piece of music. Every piece of music has an overall plan or structure, the “big picture,” so to speak. This is called the FORM OF MUSIC. Musical forms offer a great range of complexity. Most listeners will quickly grasp the form of a short and simple piece, or of one built from many short repetitions.

Peter and the Wolf

INTRODUCTION:

PETER AND THE WOLF is a musical story that was written and composed by Russian composer, Sergei Prokofiev in 1936. He wrote the music as a child's introduction to the orchestra with each character being represented by an instrument or group of instruments.

The story is about a boy named Peter (Violin/Strings) who lives with his Grandfather. Grandfather (Bassoon) does not want Peter going out of their garden because there are Wolves (French Horn/Horns) around. Peter encounters different animals (Bird/Flute; Duck/Oboe; Cat/Clarinet - All woodwinds) within the story.

You can hear the different character themes and how they represent each one if you listen closely. The Bird is represented by the Flute, as both are seen as delicate, high pitched, and light. The Hunters, by contrast, are represented by the BOOMING Tympanis.

PLEASE CLICK EACH PHOTO/INSTRUMENT BELOW TO BECOME FAMILAR WITH EACH CHARACTER. YOU CAN ALSO FIND INFO ON THE DIFFERENT INSTRUMENTS BY GOING TO DIFFERENT SLIDES. (MORE INSTRUMENT PAGES WILL BE ADDED NEXT WEEK!)

When you have listened to, and noticed the difference between each instrument, please click on the PIERRE & le LOUP poster to watch 'Peter and the Wolf' as told by the National Orchestra of France.

LOUIS ARMSTRONG

Louis Armstrong was a famous jazz trumpet player and singer. He is regarded as one of the most important and influential musicians in the history of jazz music, and music as a whole.

Louis Armstrong as a Kid:

  • Louis Armstrong was born August 4th 1901 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He grew up in a rundown area in the city known as "the Battlefield" because of the gambling, drunkenness, fighting, and shooting that frequently occurred there.

  • As a child, he would sing on street corners with his friends.

  • He only had a fifth-grade education, dropping out of school early to go to work. An early job working for a Jewish family allowed Armstrong to make enough money to purchase his first tin horn.

  • On New Years Eve 1912 at the age of 11, Armstrong was arrested for shooting a gun off in celebration and sent to the Colored Waif’s Home for Boys. It is there where he joined the Home's brass band and learned to play the cornet well.

  • After his release in 1914, Louis was mentored by New Orlean's top cornetist, Joe “King” Oliver, and became a well-known sought after musician himself.

What is "Scatting?"

In vocal jazz, scat singing is vocal improvisation (made up on the spot) with wordless vocables, nonsense syllables, or without words at all. In scat singing, the singer makes up/improvises melodies and rhythms using the voice as an instrument rather than a speaking medium. Louis Armstrong was famous for his trumpet playing, but was also an amazing singer and scat artist. He was not the first musician to use scat, but he was the first musician to make it famous with his recording of "Heebie Jeebies" in 1926.
