NorthStar Community Charter School is a project-based charter school located in Minong, WI. Our school includes students in grades 4-8. We are a "place based" school so we travel a lot. Much of our learning takes place outside of the school walls.
Project-Based Learning (PBL) is an instructional approach that engages students in active exploration and hands-on projects to deepen their understanding of academic content while developing critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. In NorthStar students work on a project over an extended period that requires them to research, plan, and create a tangible product and a presentation.
Place-Based Learning is an educational approach that emphasizes the use of the local community and environment as a context for learning. This method encourages students to explore and engage with their surroundings, connecting academic content to real-world experiences. By incorporating local history, culture, and natural resources into the curriculum, students at NorthStar gain a deeper understanding of their community and its significance.
Building traditions within the NorthStar community offers numerous benefits that foster connection, continuity, and a sense of belonging. Traditions create shared experiences that strengthen relationships. Additionally, traditions can promote community engagement, as they often involve collective participation in celebrations, rituals, or events that bring people together. Some traditions that we carry on in NorthStar are maple syrup making, canoeing, wild rice harvesting and cross-country skiing.
