Scopes

GHG emissions by scope

The metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions produced by each scope of the inventory.

ghg emissions by scopes 1 & 2

The metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions produced by scope 1 and 2 of the inventory.

In the pie charts above, Scope 2 includes electricity which is carbon neutral. This was included to show the emissions that would have been produced by electricity is SCL did not buy carbon offsets.

Scopes

Each type of greenhouse gas emissions falls into Scope 1, 2, or 3:

  • Scope 1: All direct missions from the activities of an organization or under their control.

  • Scope 2: Indirect emissions from electricity purchased and used by the organization.

  • Scope 3: All other indirect emissions from activities of the organization, occurring from sources that they do not own or control.

Excluded Contributors

There are other contributors from NWS that produce greenhouse gas emissions that were not included in this inventory due to lack of data, access to data, and/or time constraints. Some examples of these contributors include emissions produced from food in the Dining Program, waste stream, and refrigerants and chemicals. Emissions from food and waste fall under Scope 3, while refrigerants and chemicals are Scope 1.
