Character Lessons
Mindfulness
This month’s character lesson will be on Mindfulness! Grades K-5 will read “Be Where Your Feet Are!” by Julia Cook. The book focuses on being present in the moment.
Below are some ways you can talk with your child about how to be mindful.
Model how to be present! Kids learn from their parents and those around them. Be mindful of all that is going on and make an effort to encourage others to become more aware.
Put down the screen! In recent research studies, kids have noted they feel less valued by adults because they have to compete for attention with a screen. It is very important to put down your phone when talking to your child.
Schedule screen free time. Create memories by talking to each other as opposed to looking at other people on a screen.
Eliminate all distractions during homework time. Create a space where your child can work on their homework away from any screens or distractions. Allow for frequent breaks.
Encourage deep breathing. Set aside a few minutes every day to have your child close their eyes and take some deep breaths
