Library Class Overview
Library classes at Willow Grove Elementary School are designed to help students grow as readers, thinkers, creators, and responsible digital citizens.
Throughout the year, library instruction is connected to Social Emotional Learning (SEL), seasonal themes, holidays and cultural observances, literature, research, and technology. Students explore books and activities that encourage important skills such as belonging, empathy, kindness, curiosity, perseverance, leadership, and self-reflection.
Lessons also incorporate the New York State Computer Science and Digital Fluency Standards, giving students opportunities to build age-appropriate skills in digital citizenship, online safety, information literacy, research, problem-solving, computational thinking, and the responsible use of technology.
Each month, students engage with new themes, genres, authors, celebrations, and learning experiences. Library class may include:
Read-alouds and book discussions
Social Emotional Learning connections
Holidays, heritage months, and special observances
Literature genres and author studies
Research and information literacy
Digital citizenship and online safety
Computer science and digital fluency activities
Creative projects and collaborative learning
Book exploration and independent checkout
The goal of our Library Media Center is to create a welcoming learning environment where every student belongs, every reader has a voice, and curiosity is always encouraged.
