In order to apply to the Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, you must have completed the following before March 1st during your Junior year:
Sign up for REMIND announcements (code can be found under "sign ups" page on this site. This is the only way you'll hear about upcoming fundraisers!)
One (1) Fundraising hour (dates are still TBD, an announcement will be sent out via REMIND APP when dates are determined)
Pay your $25 membership fee (please do not try to pay this before applications are open) The money must be handed in BEFORE the application deadline. Check your email in the spring of your Junior year for application deadline info. Money can be handed directly to Ms. Reynolds, Mrs. Nadell, or your current math teacher.
(This fee is higher than other honor societies at NR because there is a national membership fee for Mu Alpha Theta.)
Payment may be cash or check (made out to Mu Alpha Theta) and MUST be in a sealed envelope with your FULL NAME clearly written on it.
If for any reason your application is rejected, you will receive a full refund, and information via email on how/where to pick up your refund.
In addition to completing the above requirements, all applicants must:
have completed Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2
be currently enrolled in Precalculus, Calculus, or RCC Statistics
have a cumulative math GPA of 3.5 or higher
Once a member (after the induction ceremony in the Spring), you'll be required to help tutor at math lab.
One (1) math lab tutoring session must be completed during Quarter 4 of your junior year, after being inducted into the society.
Three (3) math lab tutoring sessions must be completed during your senior year. (One for Quarter 1, one for Quarter 2, one for Quarter 3)
Once you are a member, you'll need to complete three (3) "M.A.T." hours during your senior year, which are explained in more detail below (keep scrolling down this page and you'll see it).
Members must join the Google Classroom once acceptance letters go out via email. The class code will be found in your acceptance letter email.
Any announcements and reminders for your hours will be sent through the Remind App throughout the year. Applicants AND members are responsible for ensuring they are signed up with notifications turned on.
Mu Alpha Theta (M.A.T.) is a prestigious national organization. As such, we must hold ourselves up to certain standards set by our chapter in order to do our part within the academic community. All members are required to complete three (3) M.A.T. hours before April of your senior year, in addition to your math lab hours.
Please note that M.A.T. hour opportunities are only those announced and/or approved by our advisors Ms. Reynolds and Mrs. Nadell. Any out-of-school or non-math-related hours will not be accepted. Keep an eye out for our announcements throughout the year; you should NOT go looking for your own community service to fulfill this requirement- it will not be approved.
Examples of M.A.T. Hours in previous years:
bake sales
candy sales
making posters/fliers for bake sales
designing/editing our Site
math newsletter committees
baking for fundraising
Tutoring at school (unpaid & outside of math lab)
Members who fail to complete their M.A.T. hours will be at risk of having membership revoked, as well as their Mu Alpha Theta graduation cord.
As a member of the Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society you are required to set an example and contribute to our Academic Community. One of the ways our organization accomplishes this in the high school is through Math Lab. Our Honor Society members volunteer after school to help tutor and guide peers in math.
In order to maintain your membership and receive a Mu Alpha Theta graduation cord, you must volunteer at 4 Math Labs: One (1) during Quarter 4 after being inducted as a Junior, and three (3) during your senior year (plan one per quarter, excluding fourth quarter senior year).
Math lab is supervised by Mr. Rogers & Mr. Inhaber. They are there to help if you need assistance while tutoring math lab students. Math Lab takes place period 9 in room 205 every Monday and Wednesday. Tutors are expected to:
circulate the room, helping students as needed
be a bit "pushy"!! Many times students are afraid to ask for help.
collaborate with other tutors if there is a concept/topic/problem you feel unsure about
show up on time (2:15)
stay the entire period
This year's application deadline is February 25 2025. Be sure to READ the form CAREFULLY. Application deadline has passed. We are taking no new applicants until Spring 2026
