Course Information

Child Development 1 

Child Development I studies the physical, social, emotional, and mental development from conception through the first year of life. Students are required to take home the “Real Care” baby for one weekend as part of the class requirements. Topics related to child development are also studied such as: child abuse, parenting options, teen pregnancy, family planning, and nutrition.

Child Development 2

Child Development 2 begins with toddlers and continues through adolescence. The four types of development (physical, cognitive, emotional, and social) are studied with each age group. Current concerns such as disabilities, child development theorists, early childhood education, and careers are studied throughout the semester.

Foods 1

Foods class is a 1 credit elective introductory course on nutrition and food. You will learn the basics of safety, sanitation, measuring, cooking terms, kitchen equipment, and nutrition. A highlight in the course is the lab experience. Examples of possible lab experiences may include: cookies, homemade pizza, omelets, chicken Alfredo and more!

Foods 2 

Foods 2 is a continuation from the introductory course. Topics include: convenience foods vs. homemade, cultural influences, small appliances, and meal planning, menu and restaurant creation, how to meet customer needs in a culinary setting and the fan favorite: cupcake wars!

Home Design (NEW Course!)

Home design is a course where interior design principles, and home design principles, will be the focus. We will get familiar with design software, floor plan creation, room design and redesign, color theory, budgeting, mood boards, design boards, and more.


7th Grade FCS Exploratory

Content for the 7th grade FCS exploratory is derived from the Iowa Family and Consumer Science Middle School Standards. Four standards have been selected for 7th grade students to focus on and will be the primary focus of this course.

8th Grade FCS Exploratory

Content for the 8th grade FCS exploratory is derived from the Iowa Family and Consumer Science Middle School Standards. Four standards have been selected for 8th grade students to focus on and will be the primary focus of this course.

*Health 1 

Health I introduces the students to a variety of Health topics and terminology. With a great variety of sources for Health information available, the course will help the student to sort out and use reliable information.

The topics covered are: mental and emotional health, infectious and noninfectious diseases and disorders, personality and behavior, life cycle, medicines and drugs, first aid and safety, and environmental health. Students will learn to differentiate between healthful and harmful behaviors. Through the facts learned in class, the students will have the skills to promote a healthy lifestyle for themselves

Health 2

Health II is an elective course offered to students to continue to take a more in-depth look into health topics relevant to current events, future career exploration, and issues in the world today.
