Welcome to 1st grade!
Our curriculum and daily subjects are listed below.
The Class Dojo is posted on regularly by the teacher and is also a great resource for current happenings in 1st grade!
Reading
1st Grade Reading will come home in 4 different forms.Writing & Spelling
SpellingSpelling is a weekly expectation for all 1st grade students. Please remember, students will take a pretest every Monday. If your child demonstrates a mastery knowledge of the current weeks test, your student will then receive a challenge list. A copy of every pretest will come home the following week with their assigned words.Math
Our students are exposed to many hands-on and interactive lessons with our Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Math Expressions math program. These daily lessons will help aid in creating a solid foundation for mathematical understanding. Everyday, students will discover the world of math by practicing skills such as developing an understanding of addition, subtraction, as well as strategies for addition and subtraction within 20; developing an understanding of whole number relationships and place value, including grouping in tens and ones; developing an understanding of measurement in both standard and nonstandard form; as well as understanding attributes of, and composing and decomposing geometric shapes. solving, sorting, classifying, patterning, measuring, and estimating. The Expressions Math program is a balanced blend of direct instruction, independent tasks, as well as group center work. It would be helpful for 1st Grade students to continuously work on identifying numbers 1-120, solidifying addition and subtraction facts to 20, as well as knowing numbers before and after any given number to 120 to help foster their understanding and independence in math.Science & Social Studies
In our STEAM units children learn about light and sound and animal adaptations. They also learn about themselves and the world around them. We also expose children to informational text in our themes such as weather, habitats, plants, insects, animal groups, Presidents, and mapping. Most of our Science and Social Studies is taught through our weekly themes.
Specials
Our special classes are Art, Music, Library, Guidance, and Physical Education/Health. Students should leave a pair of gym shoes in their locker. Your child will have Library once a week. Children may not check out new books until the old ones are returned.
Snack and Lunch
Snack time is in the morning before our morning recess. Please pack a healthy snack for your child each day. Some examples of healthy snacks are fruit, vegetables, granola bars, fruit snacks, yogurt, pudding, etc. Remember that nothing containing peanuts or tree nuts is allowed in the classrooms due to severe allergies within the building. Check the labels carefully. Please do not send chips, cookies or candy. Pretzels are fine. The children are also given milk at this time.
Some children think their snack is their lunch or eat their lunch at snack time. PLEASE help your child by letting them help you pack their snack, or by placing their snack in a different bag or area of their backpack. Also, please read the lunch menu and discuss whether they are having hot or cold lunch each day. If they are having hot lunch, please discuss which entrée they should choose.
