Green Acres Elementary Wins BIG With Blue Ribbon Award!

Prestigious Honor for academic success bestowed on only four Connecticut schools

Congratulations to Green Acres Elementary School for being honored with the distinguished Connecticut Blue Ribbon School Award! Many NHHS students attended Green Acres and have fond memories of special times, fabulous teachers and quality learning. We are pleased and proud to highlight this extraordinary achievement for NH Public Schools!

Governor Ned Lamont recently announced that due to the termination of the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) by the current administration, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program would be discontinued. For more than four decades the program celebrated the top performing schools across America. In order to continue the tradition of recognizing and highlighting schools that excell in academic success, the CT State Department of Education (CSDE) established the Blue Ribbon School Program to recognize "high academic excellence...growth among students and impactful commitment by staff".

The award was given by Lieutenant Governor, Susan Bysiewicz, to Principal Tracey Considine who graciously accepted on behalf of her staff and students. She expressed her appreciation stating, "I'm not just speaking professionally, I mean it with every bit of my personal truth and gratitude... Green Acres Elementary School is a small school with a big heart."

North Haven hosted all four CT Blue Ribbon honorees which also included:

House of Arts, Letters, and Science (HALS) Academy in New Britain;
Gildersleeve School in Portland;
Weston Intermediate School in Weston.

Administrators Stirk, Considine, and McKenna make up an invaluable part of the AMAZING Green Acres team which consists of 75 devoted staff members and a supportive parent community. Bravo!

Connecticut and North Haven government officials, adminstrators and educators gathered in the NHHS library for a celebration and award presentation honoring the four Blue Ribbon school winners. Principal Considine was accompanied at the event by two of her many stellar teachers, Jeanne Savoia and Eileen Ludington. She gave an eloquent acceptance speach crediting the hard work and dedication of staff members/students and the steadfast support and guidance provided by Superintendent Stirk and Assistant Superintendent McKenna. In her speach below, Considine acknowledges the Green Acres school culture rooted in excellence/kindness/care/respect:

Good afternoon! I’m Tracey Considine, and I have the absolute honor of serving as the Principal of Green Acres Elementary School—a place where curiosity thrives, and every student’s potential shines.

Before becoming Principal, I had the privilege of serving as the Language Arts Coordinator for North Haven for seven years—a role that deepened my love for education and our incredible community. Green Acres holds a very special place in my heart—not only as an educator, but also as a proud parent of a Green Acres graduate. When I say this school is a magical place, I’m not just speaking professionally—I mean it with every bit of personal truth and gratitude.

Green Acres Elementary School, located in North Haven Connecticut is a small school with a big heart. With a population of approximately 400 students, Green Acres Elementary School proudly educates children in Pre-K through grade five. At Green Acres Elementary, our relentless spirit drives everything we do — it's the foundation of our excellence and the heartbeat of our success.

A Title I school, Green Acres Elementary School has been recognized as a Connecticut School of Distinction five times since 2016. Finally, I would like to take a moment to honor the remarkable leadership of Dr. Robert Cronin, who we sadly lost last spring. Dr. Cronin began his tenure as Superintendent of North Haven Public Schools in 2011 and served with distinction until his retirement in 2019. With Melinda McKenna by his side, together they guided our district through years of growth, innovation, and progress. I have no doubt that he’s smiling down on us today, proud of what this community has accomplished.

Health and PE teacher Kevin St. Pierre posed with daughter Eliza, who attends nursery school at NHHS. Eliza is the third of St. Pierre's children to attend the wonderful nursery program run by teacher Michelle DeGiacomo, qualified staff and trained students.

The wonderful nursery school children thrive in a fantastic program under the leadership of Director of the Nighthawks Nursery School, Michele DeGiacomo. Each year they dress up in their costumes and trick or treat throughout first floor hallways to the delight and enjoyment of all! It is an exciting and safe way for the children to display their creativity while gathering delicious treats from staff who are alerted in advance of any allergies among the tiny classmates. Spooky, silly and fun-filled times abound!

America Commemorates 24th Anniversary of 9/11

The NHHS 9/11 Commemorative sculpture sits in the high school courtyard as a source of remembrance and reflection. The sculpture was designed to show the world coming together to defeat the forces of evil. Dr. David Millen created the piece along with members of the NH Art Honor Society over 25 years ago. Last year, the artist generously returned to campus to work with students to refurbish the piece after years of weather had taken its toll. It is back to its original glory and is a proud focal point of the school campus and outside courtyard.

On September 9th, 2001, the United States was subject to a terrorist attack led by Osama Bin Laden, leader of al-Qaeda, an Islamist militant organization. Bin Laden ordered three attacks: one on the World Trade Center, one on the Pentagon, and one that was headed for Washington D.C..

It is known as the deadliest terrorist attack in U.S. history, with 2977 deaths in the attacks across the country.

There is much speculation about why the attacks happened, and many experts nowadays still do not know for sure why Bin Laden ordered the attacks. Some say it was because of the United States’ support of Israel, but most of bin Laden’s letters point to his hatred of President Bush and his hope to “destroy and bankrupt” the U.S.

According to a 2023 resolution, only 14 states require that 9/11 be taught in schools. However, according to a 2018 survey of 1,047 U.S teachers, most history teachers cover the topic annually, especially on the anniversary.

A study done by Pew Research Center says that a whopping 93% of people 30 years or older say they remember exactly where they were on the day of September 11, 2001.

Although it is nearly impossible to quantify how many lives were directly saved by first responders, their sacrifices are credited with saving over 25,000 lives that could have easily been lost in the attacks. Evacuations, like at Morgan Stanley that saved thousands, and search and rescue operations conducted by first-responders and even some civilians allowed for countless lives to be saved.

The events of September 11th are also remembered because of the extraordinary means by which people were saved from the attack. After the planes struck the Twin Towers, civilians began looking for any way to leave the island of Manhattan, some even jumped into the Hudson river that borders Manhattan. However, thousands of people didn’t need to swim across the river, as they were met with a “makeshift armada” of over 150 boats that ferried people across the river. This fleet, made up of commercial, public, and private vessels, helped rescue over 500,000 people in less than 9 hours, making it the largest boat evacuation in history.

Unfortunately, as time goes on, the tragedy has become a distant memory for many and for others who were not born at the time, the events of 9/11 have even less significance. However, there are many ways that we can remember the lives lost, civilians and first responders alike.

One way one can remember the events of 9/11 is by doing a memorial stair climb, which is an annual event that honors the fallen first responders who saved countless lives. In this event participants climb 110 stories, the equivalent of climbing to the top of the World Trade Center. Both firefighters and civilians alike participate in the climb.

Finally, the National September 11 Memorial & Museum was erected to remember the thousands of lives lost in the terrible attack. It is located at the former site of the Twin Towers, and is run by a non-profit organization who desires to raise funds to continue to operate the memorial and museum.

The Phoenix Travels to... Iceland!

“The Land of Fire and Ice” a place with volcanos, glaciers, and hot springs covering the land. A country rooted in nature and community, valuing resilience, emphasizing a strong, supportive community. This is none other than Iceland.

Iceland was originally named “Snowland” when it was first explored by Naddodd, the first known Norseman to reach Iceland in the 9th century. He named the island “Snowland” because he saw snow on the mountains when he first arrived. After Naddodd, a Swedish Viking named Garðar Svavarsson arrived and traveled around the island. He later renamed the island “Garðar's Isle” after himself. The final name of the island was given by the Viking Flóki Vilgerðarson. After a harsh winter led to the death of his livestock and daughters passing, Flóki climbed a mountain. He then saw a fjord filled with icebergs. This inspired him to name the island “Iceland” which went on to stay its name.

Tourist attractions in Iceland range from the alluring Northern Lights to the Blue Lagoon to the breathtaking waterfalls: Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss. From September to early April when the nights are long and dark enough the Northern Lights will be visible from Iceland. Areas where light pollution isn't as prominent will be more successful in seeing the Northern Lights such as the south coast. The Blue Lagoon is a geothermal spa located on the Reykjanes Peninsula in southwestern Iceland. The lagoon has milky-blue, mineral-rich waters that are used for their therapeutic and rejuvenating properties. Visitors may relax in the healing waters. The waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss are located on Iceland’s south coast. Seljalandsfoss features a unique path to walk behind its cascade, a 197 foot drop and cave behind it. Skógafoss features tall cliffs with a wide view revealed by the stairs leading up to it. It is a wider, powerful waterfall with frequent rainbows at the top.

The naming system in Iceland is unique to many other places. In Iceland they use a naming system known as the patronymic (or matronymic) system with sons last names ending in -sson and daughters last names ending in -sdóttir derived from the fathers first name. The official Naming Committee approves names to ensure that they work with the Icelandic language’s grammar and spelling. Middle names are uncommon in Iceland, instead some people may have two first names.

Iceland is an incredibly beautiful, unique, and magical place. If you haven’t already, make sure to add it to your list of places to visit!

Independent Study Students Combine Handbuilt and Wheel-Throwing Processes For Exceptional Results

Final color, design, embelishment choices will be featured in winter issue!

Tessa Grillo, Avery Russo, Camilla Bianchi, and Kaya Sivri demonstrate the process of throwing on the potter's wheel. The lesson objective is to create utilitarian and aesthetically pleasing three dimensional birdbath sculptures.

Through communication, informed thinking, problem solving and collaborative conversations, they combine components to create artwork that considers: relative proportions, balance, visual harmony, and overall unity.

Students assess size and scale of body bases/basins to prepare for final decorative stages. They will explore techniques involving melted stained glass, bubble glazing and slip trailing linear patterns to construct pieces of unique beauty.

Students continue to decorate their bird baths with carving (incising) and the addition of a variety of relief details throughout the careful drying stages.

NHHS Hosts Engineering and Manufacturing Event

Students Interact with local businesses and learn valuable career information

The Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce under the direction of Workforce Development Specialist, Muriel Abeledo, recently provided a wonderful Engineering and Manufacturing Career Day for NHHS students. Career and Technical Education Program Coordinator, Amy Raup collaborated with Abeledo to organize the event which featured five companies who shared their knowledge and expertise with over 60 students who were in attendance. Groups of participants were brought to the library by their instructors and rotated around the room visiting various representatives to learn about career opportunities, manufacturing/business strategies/policies, creation and marketing/advertising of products and more. The presenters were extremely knowledgeable and generous with their time and it was a great way for students to connect with and learn from the business community.

NH Education Foundation Supports Students

Organization continues to finance exceptional opportunities for district children

Students/staff have long benefited from the generosity of the NH Education Foundation (NHEF). Local businesses raise funds to provide exceptional opportunities for the town's local schools. The machines are also used for extracurricular projects by Art Club and Art Honor Society students in support of Art Beat.

2025 "UnConference day" Event Once Again Proves Inspiring, Informative and Enjoyable PD for teachers

Superintendent Patrick Stirk and Assistant Superintendent Melinda McKenna (at right with COO of NH Public Schools, Christian Strickland) once again organized an "Unconference day" on November 4th as a professional development event for North Haven teachers. Staff members shared their talents/skills to offer a wide range of experiences to colleagues in four workshops throughout the day. Participants selected from a range of activities designed to enlighten, engage, and inform in unique and diversified ways.

Students take note: thinking outside of the box and sharing time and talents with others can be rewarding and uplifiting for all! Check out the smiling faces below!

Superintendent Stirk states: "This was the second UnConference held by the district on election day with the last one offered in 2019. We believe that the UnConference PD is valuable for our teachers because it provides them the opportunity to have a professional development experience that is completely self-directed. Teachers chose to facilitate a session (or multiple sessions) or attend some of the 50 sessions that were available. The event highlighted our teachers personal and professional interests and allowed them to share these interests with their colleagues."

PE Coordinator Dave Fazzouli Offered "adventurous" session supported by student volunteers

Teachers had the opportunity to participate in Project Adventure which is a Tenth Grade Physical Education elective. The Outdoor Ed model focuses on leadership, communication, social interaction and learning to accept challenges and push out of one's comfort zone. Throughout the year, students participate in team building activities and a variety of Climbing Elements on the Ropes Course.

Teachers participated in team building activities that focused on communication and making social connections. The group then explored the outdoor Ropes Course where NHHS Project Adventure Student Facilitators helped them get acclimated with safety gear, the belaying technique and participating in guided climbs. Student volunteers were: Nick Gaetano, Charlie Daniele, Quinn Bergin, Max Rothwell, Josh Stefanik, Ronan Holt, Max Farago, Ella Couture, and Mia Madonna.

PBIS Revamps Program With New Inititiatives to Promote Positive Behaviors

The first recipients of the PBIS awards were chosen by their peers. Math teacher Mrs. Larissa Opramolla and Senior Kaylee Kowalewski were both selected for their compassion, kindness, positive attitude, and making others feel welcomed and appreciated. Congratualtions to both individuals for helping make NHHS a wonderful place!

Committee Revamps PBIS Focus to Build a Stronger, Kinder NHHS Community

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, or PBIS, plays an important role in shaping the welcoming and supportive atmosphere at North Haven High School. The framework focuses on uplifting students, building connections, and creating a school culture where everyone feels valued. By centering the environment around positivity and encouragement, PBIS helps students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

A major part of PBIS is teaching and reinforcing positive behaviors in all areas of the school. Whether students are in a classroom, walking through the hallways, or grabbing lunch in the cafeteria, expectations are clearly taught and consistently modeled. When students demonstrate these behaviors, staff members recognize and reinforce them, helping students build confidence and make better choices. This consistent approach not only strengthens relationships among students and staff but also creates a more inclusive space where everyone knows what it means to contribute to a positive school community.

The recent PBIS nominations of Mrs. Larissa Opromolla and senior student Kaylee Kowaleski highlight how impactful kindness and compassion can be. Both individuals are known for their warm, supportive presence and their willingness to help others. They embody the values PBIS aims to promote positivity, respect, and genuine care for the people around them. Their actions serve as an example for the entire school and show how one person’s attitude can influence the environment in a meaningful way.

PBIS continues to shape the culture at North Haven High School by encouraging students and staff to lead with empathy and positivity. The recognition of role models like Mrs. Opromolla and Kaylee serves as a reminder that small, thoughtful actions matter and that each person contributes to the overall school climate.

If any student is interested in getting involved with PBIS or learning more about how it works, they are encouraged to speak with Mr. Fiondella- he will answer questions, and help students become part of the effort to make NHHS an even more supportive and connected community.

Breaking Boundaries: Women in Sports and Media Present at Quinnipiac to Invited Students and Guests

North Haven Highschool students were invited to attend this event and listen to inspiring women speak about their experiences in the sports media world.

Editor Sophiea Runlett shares about her experience at the event stating, "It was such a wonderful event. The women speaking set a great example for young women hoping to go into journalism and other male dominated careers."

Fashion students, under the guidance of teacher Kathryn Speeg, enjoyed a recent Pajama Donut Day celebration! They wore their self-tailored PJ pants and assessed the quality of their craftsmanship and the comfort of their designs while enjoying delicious donuts and critiquing each other's work.

Visions of Nature Students Take a Field Trip to Hike Sleeping Giant

Students hiked four different trails (Tower Trail, Blue Trail, Red Circle Trail, and Violet Trail) and learned about the park's human and natural histories.

Prior to the trip, students were tasked with reading essays about The Quarry, The Stone Tower, and The Chestnut Plantation, as well as reading poetry about the park during lunch at the Tower.

Mr. Sagnella states that, "All in all, an adventurous, educational trip!"
