The goal of including homework and in-class notes in one place is for me to be able to see your thought process. You should read, take your own notes or answer questions at home, discuss in class, and add in-class notes. Your journal should reflect that process.

Unit 1: Reconstruction
What were the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments, when did they take effect, and what did they do?
How were the goals and tactics of the Radical Republicans different from those of the Conservative Republicans? How did those differences play out in policy during Reconstruction?
Reconstruction could also be termed changing or rebuilding? What are some ways the South was “rebuilt” during Reconstruction (ie social changes, economic changes, etc)?
Southern Whites resisted the changes brought by Reconstruction. What are some tactics that white Southerners slowed, stopped, or reversed the changes of Reconstruction?
What is the Compromise of 1877 and what was its effect on Reconstruction?
Was Reconstruction a success or failure? What specifics do you point to in order to make this conclusion?
Unit 2: Age of Industry
How and why did the U.S. rapidly, if unevenly, industrialize in the late 19th and early 20th centuries?
What tactics did corporations and corporate leaders use to consolidate their wealth and influence in the late 19th and early 20th centuries?
How did the labor movement respond to changes in their working conditions in the late 19th and early 20th centuries?
How did the Party system in the late 19th century clash with Populism and the ideas of “reform?” What are some specific actions taken by each side that show their position?
What were some ways that women became important players in social and political movements in the late 19th and early 20th centuries?
What are at least three examples of progressive legislation (not Amendments) that lessened the power of corporations and/or helped improve the lives of people in the late 19th and early 20th centuries?
What were the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th Amendments, when did they take effect, and what did they do?
Unit 3: Immigration and Urbanization
How did the West, with its multi-racial history and culture, change in the latter half of the 19th century to center the experience of Anglo-American migrants?
In what ways did the development of the West occur in parallel (though obviously in different ways) to the development of the East over the latter half of the 19th century?
What are some ways that the rapid urbanization of the late 19th and early 20th centuries made the lives of regular people (not the wealthy) harder? What ways did it make their lives easier?
What are some things that were created in the late 19th and early 20th centuries that we would now consider “normal” aspects of American culture?
