For survivors of intimate partner violence, cell phones can be a lifeline or a leash. Phones can track your exact location in real time. Call and text history can also be retrieved by an abusive partner or party. Further, for survivors with shared or family phone plans, the person who controls the account, oftentimes their abuser, can access a survivor’s call records and even the precise location of their device—information that can then be used to harass, intimidate, stalk or carry out violence.
For these reasons, the DVI is raising money to provide survivors of domestic violence free pay-as-you-go phones (to include the data and calling plan). Phones will ensure that survivors can safely and securely call for services and support, reach their attorneys and advocates, call the police, contact family, friends and medical providers without worry that their abuser will track their location or monitor their calls or text messages.
