The fabulous thing about books is that you can read them pretty much anywhere. But what do you do if, gasp, you run out of books and, double gasp, the library is closed?? The school library is closed until further notice, as is Auckland Libraries. To access many of the online resources available from Auckland Libraries you need a membership. Here is the latest information on how you can get a membership and all the amazing online resources available from Auckland Libraries. Membership is free and not only gives you access to physical books, but also thousands of ebook and audiobook titles, online magazines, podcasts and streaming films. They also have fantastic homework resources, link further down the page.

Once you have an Auckland Libraries membership, you can use it to set yourself up with one (or more) of the platforms that Auckland Libraries subscribes to. You could do this on any of your devices. I have Libby and BorrowBox on my phone so that I can listen to audiobooks, but you could access them on your Chromebook, laptop, desktop or eReader. See here for a helpful guide on getting started with OverDrive (although similar applies for other platforms such as BorrowBox).
Both OverDrive (which has an app called Libby) and BorrowBox have thousands of ebook and audiobook titles of every genre including non-fiction. I love audiobooks because they free up my hands to do stuff like housework, or in yesterdays case, a nice bit of therapeutic colouring in. However, I can see that if we do have to stay home, ebooks will also come in handy. Click here to see some of the great young adult titles available!
Rivetedlit.com is a fabulous website where you can explore books, audiobooks, quizzes and videos. I really enjoyed the quizzes and the vidoes, which are usually interviews with YA authors!
Explore the free audio books on Open Culture, as well as many other resources, including movies.
Free stories and audiobooks from Radio New Zealand. Parental Guidance Advised (they must be good!).
audible, a subscription-based audiobook company owned by Amazon, has just made all it's children's, teen and literary novels available for free!! This is amazing and a great resource, go to this link to have a good nose through their collection. Happy listening.
Online Homework Help
If you have homework that needs to be done, take a look at our Online Resources page. This provides lots of useful links to help you access information when you need it, from wherever you are. This includes Any Questions. This is a fabulous New Zealand resource staffed by librarians to help you search online for the information you need. So how does it work? Live chat with a librarian between 1pm and 6pm Monday - Friday; tell them what you are searching for, which subject it is for etc, and they will search the internet with you for relevant and trusted websites, they will even email you a list of websites they found so that you don't have to remember them all (you could give them your school email for this). Give it a go!
The National Library Topic Explorer is a great way of finding relevant and trusted resources for a particular topic e.g. WWll, Ancient Greeks, human Rights and many more. It's great because it might take you to a website which has lots of other useful information on it.
For this you need an Auckland Libraries membership, which is free. See the top of this page for details.
This is another great resource, not just for resource databases aimed at particular school levels, but also online courses on Lynda.com, if you find yourself with some time on your hands!
This is another fantastic resource database collection, similar to what is available from Auckland Libraries. The New Zealand government pays the subscription and each school has their own login and password. If you need the login details, ask a teacher or email js@northcote.school.nz (Librarian).
