Is there a lot of homework or take home projects? No. In 6th grade we tend to ease up on homework. That being said, a student should be reading every night and studying for upcoming tests. Students will not be asked to get together outside of school for group projects.
How do I know about my child’s homework and upcoming tests? All teams have a designated online homework page. This homework page is projected and students are given the opportunity to copy it each day. As a parent, we encourage you to look at this webpage daily. Information on how to access the homework page will be provided at the fall Open House.
What about the lunch tables? For the first month students will sit according to their team. This allows students from all the different schools an opportunity to get to know each other. After about a month, students will be given the opportunity to stay where they are or to sit with other students.
What about locks and lockers? Please be aware that the lockers are very narrow. Large or wheeled backpacks may not fit into the locker. All locks may be purchased at the beginning of the year for $7.00. We will provide extensive training in locker combinations.
What about school supplies? Our list is posted on our webpage.
When do report cards come out? They don’t! Everything is on PowerSchool. You have access to your child’s grades 24/7. You should be checking this on a regular basis especially after tests and quizzes.
What about extra credit? The school policy is to not offer extra credit. Students are given re-learning opportunities and teachers are available for extra help.
What is the content of each academic subject? An overview will be provided following this meeting and during the Open House in the fall.
What does a student schedule look like? This will be addressed in the fall, but students will have the core four academic subjects (math, science, language arts, social studies) and Related Arts classes, such as music, art and physical education, etc.. The Related Arts will change with each trimester.
Where do I drop my child off in the morning? All students should be dropped off in the back of the school and enter Symmes Lobby. On the first day, all students will report to the auditorium. Traffic patterns will be posted on the school website. (Be aware that the first week will be chaotic. We ask that you remain patient and respect the person/people directing traffic)
What time does school start? Students should arrive between 7:20-7:35 and should be in homeroom no later than 7:40. Any student arriving after that time must check in with the office and will be marked tardy.
How do I get work for my child if they are out sick? Work is usually sent home after the third day of absence. Contact your child’s homeroom teacher to collect any work missed. Encourage your child to advocate for his/her self when they return to make up any missed work.
How do I get in touch with my child’s teacher? All teachers have an email address and this would probably be the quickest way to contact any teacher. Our email addresses are on our website.
How do I get a message to my child during the school day? The best way of getting a message to your child during the day is to contact the office. The office will let us know and we can inform your child
What should I do if my child is having some issues in class, at lunch, or with other students? In any of the above cases it is suggested that you begin with your child’s teacher or guidance counselor. This guidance counselor will be with your child in 6th, 7th and 8th grade.
How do I know about upcoming events at the school? All information is provided on the school website http://www.northandoverpublicschools.com/schools/nams
