WIN Classes

The journey of a lifetime starts with the turning of a page.

WIN classes provide focused instruction on the foundational reading skills necessary for reading success. My goal as an interventionist is to solidify the skills for my students that were not mastered during previous instruction.

In Kindergarten, we practice phonological awareness, letter recognition, letter-sound correspondence, sight words, and reading words, phrases, and sentences. Repetition is key to developing accuracy and automatic recognition!

Instruction in first and second grade primarily focuses on phonics, reading and spelling pattern-specific words. We also build on fluency at the word, sentence, and paragraph level. Our daily lessons involve reading and spelling sounds & words, with repeated readings of phrases, sentences, and books. Repetition is key to developing accuracy and automatic recognition!

The focus for my 3rd, 4th and 5th graders has moved to comprehension, with added fluency building. We work on learning how to be strategic readers and gather meaning from text, a task that struggling readers can not do automatically. We apply these reading strategies while we dig into text to address the many comprehension skills that apply to reading intermediate level material. Practice is key to developing confidence and mastery of strategies and skills!
