What is MTSS

The goal of early childhood education should be to activate the child's own natural desire to learn.

~Dr. Maria Montessori

MTSS stands for Multi-Tiered System of Supports and is a general framework for providing appropriate behavioral and academic support in multi-tiered systems. Within the academic side of instructional support, a data-driven process is used to identify students at risk of not meeting grade-level expectations and intervene to fill gaps and improve students' performance.

WIN ("What I Need") period is designed to provide students with targeted reading instruction based on their needs. During WIN time, students who are identified for additional support in reading work with one of the reading specialists or interventionists on specifically designed reading instruction in small groups. As an MTSS team, we carefully analyze student data from our universal screener, standardized tests, curriculum-based assessments, and teacher input to identify students in need of support and interventions. As a team, we continually progress monitor to determine appropriate growth with the reading interventions in place and to decide if changes need to occur. WIN groups are meant to be flexible, and students will move in and out of specific groups throughout the year in order to most appropriately fit their needs in reading.
