MTSS

MTSS stands for Multi-Tiered System of Supports and is a 3-tiered model of support that uses data-based problem solving to implement appropriate behavioral and academic instruction and interventions.

WIN ("What I Need") period is designed to provide students with targeted reading instruction based on their needs. During WIN time, students that are identified for additional support in reading work with one of the reading specialists or interventionists on specifcially designed reading instruction in small groups. As an MTSS team, we carefully monitor student data using our universal screener, standardized tests, curriculum-based assessments, and teacher input to identify students in need of support and interventions. WIN groups are meant to be flexible, and students will move in and out of specific groups throughout the year in order to most appropriately fit their needs in reading.

WIN Classes

WIN classes provide focused instruction on the foundational reading skills necessary for reading success. My goal as an interventionist is to solidify the skills for my students that were not mastered during previous instruction.

In Kindergarten, we practice phonological awareness, letter recognition, letter-sound correspondence, sight words, and reading words, phrases, and sentences. Repetition is key to developing accuracy and automatic recognition!

Instruction in first and second grade primarily focuses on phonics, reading and spelling pattern-specific words. We also build on fluency at the word, sentence, and paragraph level. Our daily lessons involve reading and spelling sounds & words, with repeated readings of phrases, sentences, and books. Repetition is key to developing accuracy and automatic recognition!

The focus for my 3rd, 4th & 5th grade groups is comprehension, with added fluency building. We work on learning how to be strategic readers and gather meaning from text, a task that struggling readers can not do automatically. We apply these reading strategies while we dig into text to address the many comprehension skills that apply to reading intermediate level material. Practice is key to developing confidence and mastery of strategies and skills!
