Best Practices in Securing Your Zoom Virtual Classroom
With schools back in session, it’s essential to make sure you’re taking the proper precautions to secure your Zoom classroom. Follow these steps to ensure a secure virtual classroom experience for you and your students.
1. SET YOUR MEETING CONTROLS BEFORE CLASS
Utilize meeting controls in your Zoom settings to minimize disruptions.
Disable "Join before host": Keep students from entering a meeting before you start it
Use meeting passcodes: Required to join
Only allow authenticated users: Participants must be signed into their Zoom account with your school’s domain
Disable screen sharing: Participants must ask permission to share
Restrict annotation: Prevent annotation on shared content or display names of annotators

2. GET FAMILIAR WITH THE SECURITY ICON
Click the Security icon at the bottom of your meeting window to change permissions during class.
Lock the door: No one can enter once class has started
Waiting Room: New participants can be admitted on an individual basis mid-meeting
Screen Sharing: Change individual screen share permission
Chat: Disable chat between participants
Mute: Participants cannot unmute or rename themselves

3. MANAGE ACCESS WITH THE PARTICIPANTS ICON
You’re the teacher; you get to control your Zoom classroom. Click the Participants icon to:
Place participants in the Waiting Room (where you can readmit them)
Disable video for individual participants
Mute all participants
Remove participants from the meeting and restrict rejoining

4. NEVER SHARE YOUR ZOOM DETAILS PUBLICLY
Do not share your Zoom Meeting ID or passcode on any public forum, including social media and your school’s public website. Meeting disruptors search the internet for publicly posted meeting IDs. If you learn that a student or someone else has posted your meeting information online, please change the meeting ID before the next class.
