Ensembles

FROM THE NPS COURSE CATALOG

Band is a one-year elective for students with previous training in woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments. Students participate in marching band, concert band, and have the opportunity to participate in various other groups. The band performs a variety of musical styles. Required (graded) events may include concerts, contests, athletic events, and parades. Required rehearsals and performances (graded) take place outside of the school day. Band meets as a “zero” hour class; students must provide their own transportation to class.

T-Wolves Marching Band

Performs at all home football games, marching competitions, parades, and school spirit functions. Performing state of the art drill and high-energy music, the band is recognized as the largest student organization at Norman North and one of the top marching ensembles in the state. ALL MEMBERS ENROLLED IN BAND ARE PART OF MARCHING BAND.

Marching band rehearsal is Monday - Friday and begins at 7:00 am.

Wind Ensemble

Concert ensemble comprised of the top wind and percussion students in the band program. Committed to the highest standards in performance of the most prominent wind repertoire, this ensemble explores the richness and variety of contemporary and traditional music for the wind band. PLACEMENT IN THE WIND ENSEMBLE IS BY AUDITION ONLY. MEMBERS MUST AUDITION FOR CODA HONOR BAND TO BE CONSIDERED.

Wind Ensemble rehearses Monday - Friday from 7:00 - 8:35 after the conclusion of marching season.

Symphonic Band

Concert ensemble comprised of wind and percussion students with a focus of continued development of musical skills. The Symphonic Band performs literature of the highest caliber allowing the members to develop maturity in their playing. PLACEMENT INTO SYMPHONIC BAND IS BY AUDITION ONLY.

Symphonic Band rehearses Monday - Friday from 7:00 - 8:35 after the conclusion of marching season.

Jazz Band 2

Jazz ensemble comprised of trumpets, trombones, saxophones, drum set, piano, bass guitar and/or accoustic upright bass, and guitar. Students must audition for Jazz Band 2 in the spring for the following school year. STUDENTS MUST PARTICIPATE IN MARCHING BAND IN ORDER TO BE IN BIG BAND.

Jazz Band 2 meets during 1st hour 9:00 - 10:00 am.

Big Band

The top Norman North Jazz ensemble has earned a reputation as one of the schools most popular groups. The ensemble's repertoire ranges from the classic big band scores made famous by Duke Ellington to music by Herbie Hancock and the Brecker Brothers. The Big Band has earned a reputation as one of the top ensembles in the state of Oklahoma, winning the 6A OSSAA Jazz State Championship in 2015 as well with numerous top 3 placements. STUDENTS MUST PARTICIPATE IN MARCHING BAND IN ORDER TO BE IN BIG BAND.

Big Band meets during 1st hour 9:00 - 10:00 am.

Orch. Winds & Percussion

Performs with the Norman North Symphonic Orchestra at state contest and three concerts per year. This ensemble gives students the opportunity to perform in an orchestral wind and percussion setting while performing some of the standards of the literature. This is a select group of students who audition in the Spring for the following academic year. This ensemble has earned 21 OSSAA State Sweepstakes Awards (every year since NNHS has been open), has performed at the prestigious Midwest Conference, and has performed at the American String Teacher's Association. Symphonic Orchestra rehearses during upper classmen lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Musical Pit Orchestra

This ensemble performs in Norman North's annual musical production each fall. The ensemble varies in instrumentation from year to year based on the needs of the show. The top strings, winds, percussion students are asked to perform with this very musically demanding ensemble following a successful audition.
