About Melrose Reads
About Melrose Reads
Melrose Reads is based off of the "One Book" movement that began in 1998 in Seattle. These community reading promotion projects had one objective - to connect people to literature through reading and discussion. With the same hope as these programs, the ultimate goal of Melrose Reads is to promote community education and engagement through a shared experience of literacy.
2022 Melrose Reads Book Selection
American Like Me: Reflections on Life Between Cultures by America Ferrera
Our first book selection for the Melrose Reads project is American Like Me: Reflections on Life Between Cultures by award winning actress America Ferrera. It is a collection of short personal narratives written primarily by people in the public arena (actors, artists, activists, athletes). The title was chosen intentionally as the short story format offers individuals multiple engagement points - you can read just one or you can read them all - and allows a variety of perspectives to be included. The collection is published in a range of formats, from large print to audio books, so it is easy to access for most. Likewise, the narratives range in complexity, with some appropriate for students as young as middle grade readers.
An idea sparked by conversations among friends, Melrose Reads is truly a grassroots effort. These passionate individuals quickly looped in the Melrose Public Library and the Melrose Public Schools, as well as some initial organizations including The Bridge, the Melrose Education Foundation, Follow Your Art Community Studios, and the Melrose Human Rights Commission. A list of all sponsoring organizations can be found on the Get Involved page of this website; most are simply contributing the most amazing gifts of all - their time and energy. They have chosen to jump in to work to bring our community together, to make our bonds stronger.
