STORY REVIEW
The story, “There Will Be Soft Rains,” is a story that takes place in the near future and focuses on the effects of nuclear warfare. The story's main character is a house with many robotic appliances. These robotics slowly die due to the nuclear blast and it shows that time goes by from hour to hour. It starts with an alarm that was probably for the owners to wake up in the morning, and the robots prepare people who are no longer there for the morning. This includes kids going to school, people getting ready for work, and people being sent off for work. After the morning ritual ends (or while it is still going) the story moves onto a different hour and a different time. The time is now 10:00 and this house remains the last one standing from the nuclear blast, now revealing that the previous people had probably evacuated. The house, now the last standing, remains in a city of rubble surrounded by the former houses. As the minutes passed it described the rest of the city while personifying the house. Eventually, after some time has passed the house catches fire. The robots and mechanisms in the house fight for it's survival until it eventually fails. One robot remained reading a poem until then. This story is a very good story that shows the effects of nuclear power, and as it was written in 1950, that was a very prominent issue. I suggest that you read it if you have not yet.
