“Hello??”
My voice was barely above a whisper and was way too raspy, so I cleared my throat and tried again.
“Hello?”
I repeated even louder before taking a step inside, the air was so dense that it felt like I could barely breathe. My eyes landed on a cabinet right as a sort of scattering like noise startled me. I gripped at my dagger harder before getting into a defensive stance and quietly walked over to the cabinet. I heard this sort of whimpering noise, almost sounding like a little kid when they are scared and on the verge of tears. I pressed my back up against the cabinet and peeked over the corner and to my surprise the noise was indeed coming from a kid who is on the verge of tears, this kid was backed up to the wall with a gun in front of her. I put my dagger away as I didn’t want to get shot if I decided to show myself.
I realized the girl’s gun was still on lock, meaning if she did pull the trigger it wouldn’t fire. I stepped out into the open when she pointed the gun at me, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the gun harder. I slightly put my hands up in response to her action. I hesitated at the thought of asking this girl a question. If Millie did really come by here then she wouldn’t leave this child - Unless this girl stayed hidden. I took a deep breath before opening my mouth.
“I’m not here to hurt you. I am looking for someone.” The girl lowered the gun but still kept a strong grip. A moment of silence passed before I spoke again. “So, have you seen a tall woman with puffy long hair? She also has dark skin like you..”
“No…I don’t think so”
The girl had an unsure look on her face as she shook her head. Her voice was quiet but it was loud enough for me to hear everything she said. There was another question I did want to ask this girl but I was hesitant again.
“Where's your mom and dad?” I huffed out.
She swallowed hard before responding “I..I don't know”
I must've had some sort of puzzled face because the girl continued.
“My mama and papa said they’ll come back and that I should stay here” The girl stood up straighter than before. Now, knowing this information I don’t think her parents are ever going to come back. I can’t leave her here either too, who knows how long she’s been alone for and who knows it would be quite lovely to finally talk to another person. But at the same time, I don’t think she’ll leave, so I'm just going to have to convince her somehow.
“What’s your name anyways?”
“Eve..What’s yours?”
“Mine’s Evan..”
A moment of silence passed us before I asked my final question
“Alright then Eve..How about we help each other in finding our people?”
Eve stared at me for a good solid minute before nodding “Okay..” As I extended my hand it felt like my very own skin was burning and it did kinda hurt to breathe..Eve took my hand and I walked us both out of the building where it indeed got easier to breathe but my skin did still kinda hurt. Which is unusual since I have never experienced something like that before..
The sun is gone and it’s been replaced with the moon. We have to get to some place high, away from the ground, away from those things. I look around to see if there’s any stairs or ladders connected to any buildings but I can’t see anything so far. We have to go now. Away into safety. As I took a step forward I felt a shiver go down my spine as I heard this human-like wailing sound coming from infront of us, coming from the ever growing darkness.I must’ve tightened my grip on Eve’s hand because she tugged at my arm.
“Oh..Sorry”
“It’s okay..”
I nodded then started to walk to one of the bigger buildings, I would somehow try to find a way to get onto the rooftop. I don’t understand why these things decided to show up now, why didn’t they show up before? How did Eve survive them? Where did she even get the gun from? But atleast she has it to protect herself…I pull out my dagger, it isn’t much and I could just exchange it with the gun but I rather have Eve keep it just in case, I enter the building first before scooting Eve inside. The only light in the building is the moonlight that is seeping through the hole in the roof.
I can barely make it out but in front of us it’s like this huge nest thing with something inside, I kept my back close to the wall. I looked over at Eve who was staring at the nest like I was, she took a step forward and squinted her eyes.
I swear I froze in place, not like I was already moving, but it sounded like a baby crying right inside the nest. I looked over at Eve. “Could we switch?” Eve looked at me and handed her gun to me while I handed her my dagger. I told her to stay put while I go towards the noise, I know it’s risky but still, I can’t explain it but something in me wants to go check it out.
I fixed the gun’s lock and made sure there were bullets in the magazine before stepping any closer to the nest. In the nest was a baby deer laying down, it’s legs twitched as blood was seeping out of its eyes, I could see the ribs and bones on this thing, I swear its body smelled rotten too, I didn’t notice at first that this baby deer had another head until it slightly turned its first head… On the side of its head where the ear is supposed to looked like an egg or brain. The baby deer slightly moved its head to look at me and let out a loud screech. The baby tried standing up but it crawled like an actual infant after it couldn’t stand. A loud bang came from my right side, I clutched the gun harder as I raised it. Then there was another loud bang and then a creaking sound. I slowly looked to my right to see a full grown deer. It had this sharp pointy thing in the skin right in the middle of its eyes and it had a dead rabbit in its mouth. It dropped the rabbit and the deer almost looked shocked, like a mother witnessing something tragic happening to their child. I could see it in this thing’s eyes, in its expression… Its body language… I never thought I would’ve been so scared of deers until now..
The mama deer let out a loud screech before suddenly stopping, looking straight at me, it started slowly walking up to me. I backed up and pointed the gun straight at it, I should’ve just shot it but I didn’t. I could hear it breathing hard as my back pressed up against the wall, I could also hear the baby deer scratching at the wall. The mama deer stopped right in front of me, I tried controlling my breath to seem less scared but it just stared at me for a good solid minute. I blinked and looked away as I heard Eve calling, that's when the deer took its chance and bit my arm! I screamed in pain as I tried to yank this thing off but it only made the pain worse so I kicked it, in the process I did manage to get the deer off but bits of my skin were stuck in its teeth. I quickly covered my wound with my other hand, my hand was shaking as I raised the gun, the deer ran straight at me before I pulled the trigger three times. The deer’s body did collide with me and knocked me to the ground but I quickly got up as I saw Eve run around the corner.
“Everything is okay..Sorry if I scared you..” I walked over to Eve and I hissed in pain as I stopped covering the bite mark with my other hand. “Can we switch again??” My voice started getting weak and I did kinda feel light headed, but my hand shook as I raised it to Eve’s level and handed it to her as I grabbed my dagger. I looked over to the baby deer who was hunched over in a corner then I looked back at Eve.
“I want you to do something important for me…” Eve’s face was slightly lit but seemed nervous.
“Could you look for a way to get onto the roof?” I pointed to the ceiling with my good hand.
Eve nodded “Okay..!”
I slightly smiled as she took off to find a way up, it was nice to finally talk to someone, I looked over to the baby deer again and my smile quickly disappeared. I didn’t want Eve to witness this just in case it upset her. I switched the dagger over to my left hand and walked over to the baby deer as I grabbed its neck and it started to scramble its feet and wail.I slit its throat and it started making a choking nose. It eventually stopped moving after a minute or two.
