Activities & Pictures

The Leonard lab not only works on research projects...we also get involved with a variety of other activities. Check out pix of research, fun, and lab activities on this page!

Burbot season Winter 2022 has begun! Stream fishing started at the beginning of January and we are finding burbot moving around. Stay tuned for more on the fish in Lake Superior.

Fall 2021 Leonard lab!

Yup! Dan is the brook trout guy. Some pix from Fall 2021 of Dan Monhollon working in the field with undergrad Josh Ouillette chasing brook trout.

Wait a minute, Michael.... Isn't Dan supposed to be the brook trout guy??

Reinna says she is also busy this winter!! She is working on her preserved cisco larvae from last season while she waits for eggs that are currently being collected and reared at the Jordyn River Hatchery to hatch. These little ones are initially photographed, then they will be cleared and stained (a process that lets us see through the fish and examine their bones) and then photographed again to figure out at what stage we start to see head deformations that are common in hatchery reared cisco.

Our brook trout are hatching (1/15/2021)!! These fish were produced from wild captured (and released) native UP brook trout for Chase Daiek's project examining the effects of variable winter conditions on young-of-the year brookies.

Winter 2021 is getting busy!! Burbot are being captured and sampled for eggs prior to spawning.

'Tis the season for burbot! The burbot traps went into the Chocolay January 2, 2021. Hope we catch some adults on their spawning migration!

One of our lab undergrads, Michael Woodworth, and a burbot friend!

Brook trout swim up fry traps! (Cap traps!) Initially designed (with help from the literature) by Eric Miltz-Miller and used by him and later by Chase Daiek.

New behavior chambers built by the amazing Peter Pless. These are going to allow us years of fun science!

Lab photo 2019!

Installing RFID systems (summer 2017) has a grad student up a tree, family all buggy... and some gear ready to find some brook trout!
