Hair Dye and Breast Cancer Risk
A study published in the International Journal of Cancer in 2020 found an increased risk of breast cancer among women who reported using permanent hair dyes and chemical straighteners. The relative risk was highest for Black women using permanent hair dyes with a more modest increased risk with straighteners. Causation has not been established but the "results suggest that chemicals in hair products may play a role in breast carcinogenesis."
Race Adjustment of GFR Results in Inaccurate Estimates
A joint National Kidney Foundation and American Society of Nephrology task force has called for a change in how glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is estimated. As part of the report, the task force cited research that showing that the current method results in an overestimate of GFR in Black patients. Such an overestimation could delay treatment of renal disease by underestimating severity. The authors suggest a new method that omits race as a factor. It is unclear if and when labs might incorporate these recommendations.
