St. Kevin's High School officially opened its doors to students for the first time in 1913. At that time the school consisted of only one room, serving grades one to eleven, and housing 32 scholars. From 1913 to the late 1940's, St. Kevin's was a parochial school, meaning the school was staffed by lay teachers. The school continued this format until 1937 when, because of increased demand for space, an additional classroom was added.
On September 6, 1949 a new era of education began at St. Kevin's as a result of Newfoundland joining Confederation. By the early 1960's, the main concern in the school was the need for space. In 1963, what is now the older elementary school was opened to the public.
In this new school there was a total of eleven classrooms. A two story section was added in 1971 and provided two more classrooms. In 1972, with an increased demand for more space, six portable units were added at St. Kevin's.
As the years went by, St. Kevin's began to expand by increasing its staff and extracurricular activities. As a result, St. Kevin's evolved into a new era of education. It all started when the present-day St. Kevin's Elementary school was opened on January 5,1981. It provided 20 new classrooms as well as a library, gymnasium and cafeteria. By this time the population of St. Kevin's had grown to 862. The final development took place in St. Kevin's in 1990.
The residents of Goulds, Petty Harbour and Maddox Cove wanted a new school to be built to accommodate all three communities. This new school would help St. Kevin's get more teachers and attain certain activities. A new high school, located on the Back Line, was opened up in September 1990.
Today our high school has an enrollment of approximately 400 students from grade 9 to level IV. Although not a big school, we still have many activities to participate in such as sports, art, skilled trades, and music programs. We are looking forward to many more good years of education as we continue beyond our 100th anniversary.
