Course Selection

Course Selection Information for Parents, Guardians and Students for the 2021-2022 School Year.

St. Kevin’s High School is rolling out the Course Selection Process for students enrolled in school for the 2021-2022 school year. Registration will take place using Google Forms. Parents and guardians of current grade 9 students are asked to watch the video presentation below as a starting point in the process. Before directing questions to staff, please ensure you watch the video carefully.

It is also recommended that you make a copy of page one of the Level One Course Selection Sheet as a guide in helping with the process. Finally, there is a PDF file of the four sides in the video presentation that contain active links to the associated documents referenced.

Google Forms for current Level One (Grade 10) and Level Two (Grade 11) students will be added as they become available. Information will be provided to these students through their online learning using Google Classroom prior to selecting courses for next year.

Below we will post answers to frequently asked questions that may assist parents, guardians and students in making the most informed choices when selecting courses for next year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are questions that have been asked by a number of people and we fee should be shared for others who may have similar queries.

  1. When are the course selection form due?

As of right now, the course selection process is in the information gathering stage. Forms should not be submitted until students and parents have taken the time to review all the necessary information provided, consulted with the necessary subject area teachers before submitting anything online.

  1. Are teacher signatures required to select a given course for next year?

During the current closure of schools and maintaining a safe environment for students and teachers, we are using an online process. While signatures are not possible in this format, it is expected that students will reach out to their teachers to ensure they are advised on the most suitable choices for next year. Teachers will review the selections again when they are submitted and where necessary reach out to students to review the choices they have made.

  1. Can the Google Form be changed once submitted?

The form is open for editing until selections are transferred over to PowerSchool. When this happens the Link to the form will be made inactive and the only way to make a change will be by contacting either Mr. Smith or Mr. Power.

  1. What is the difference between Writing 2203 and French 1200 for Level One students and why select one over the other?

First of all, French 1200 is a Core French course and is encouraged for students who wish to continue to learn Core French in High School. This course is NOT for French Immersion students. After taking French throughout their schooling, it is advisable to continue and finish the Core French program in High School. However, some students have lost interest in French and wish to no longer continue with French. These students would select Writing 2203 as it is offered in English. One or the other is required for graduation under the "Optional Language Arts" category.

  1. I did not take Level Two Biology this year in Grade 11 but now realize I need a biology course next year as I plan to do nursing after High School. Can I take it in Grade 12?

Yes, you can take either Biology 2201 or 3201 in Grade 12. Biology 2201 is not a prerequisite for Biology 3201. You can take either in your last year as long as you have completed Science 1206.

  1. The presentation to Grade 10-11 students says that French Immersion students once they move into the program cannot change to English because of their Social Studies Courses. Can you explain that please?

It is not that they cannot move into the English stream. The issue is that it is very difficult then to go backwards and complete the prerequisite Social Studies 2201 for Social Studies 3201. French Immersion students use their Français 3202 for their Academic Diploma, not Social Studies 3201. A move to the English stream requires they backtrack, which may prevent them from taking 2 sciences or double math in Grade 12.
