Home of the Cardinals

Located in Avondale, in scenic Conception Bay Center, Newfoundland, Roncalli Central High School has a student population of approximately 350 in grades seven through twelve and a teaching staff of 23 with a support staff of 7. The school is part of NLSchools.  Students are drawn from rural communities in Conception Bay Centre: Holyrood, Harbour Main-Chapel’s Cove-Lakeview, Avondale, Conception Harbour, Colliers and neighbouring Brigus Junction.

Roncalli was opened in 1967. It is named in honor of Pope John XXIII, born Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli (November 25, 1881 – June 3, 1963), who was elected as the 261st Pope of the Catholic Church.

Roncalli conducts a full suite of academic courses. The school is active in the areas of public speaking, literary competitions, district art shows, district junior and senior drama festivals, choir, French speak-off, Skills Canada and mathematics competitions. Our students are annually represented at the Canada Skills Competition, the Forum for Young Canadians, the Newfoundland and Labrador Youth Parliament, the Provincial Student Leadership Conference, the Newfoundland Science Centre Boat Races, and the Encounters with Canada program. In addition, Roncalli students have an active Student Leadership Team, Environment and Conservation Club, Social Justice Club, school newspaper, along with an award winning sports program.
