At the end of this lesson, you will be able to set safety measures for your Meet by turning on or off the different Host Controls.
The Host of a meeting is the person who created the Meet link. If it is a Google Classroom Meet, all teachers of the class in Google Classroom are automatically hosts. A host of a Meet has a variety of tools available that regular participants do not, including many activities which will be explored later in this guide. Hosts are also able to add or remove participants. Host Controls also allow the hosts to manage settings for the the meeting. Host Controls can be found in the Toolbar on the far right and they are identified by a shield icon with a lock. Click there to access the Host Controls.
You can turn off Host Management and allow all participants in the meeting the ability to admit or remove participants, mute participants, record the call, present, etc. This would not be recommended with students and only recommended if all participants are certain to act responsibly.
Share their screen: When turned on, anyone in the Meet will be able to share their screen with the other participants. When turned off, only the hosts will be able to share their screens during the Meet.
Send chat messages: When turned on, anyone in the Meet will be able to communicate with other participants by typing into the chat. When turned off, only the Host will be able to type into the chat.
When turned on, those joining your Meet from within your organization (NLESD) can enter automatically. However, those from outside of your organization will have to ask for permission and will have to be admitted manually by a host. When turned off, everyone who isn't invited must ask to join, including people in your organization (NLESD).
