Literacy

Each day, we have a Literacy Block at school. Students work through tasks including:

๐Ÿ”น Read to Self ๐Ÿ”น Read to Someone ๐Ÿ”น Listen to Reading ๐Ÿ”น Work on Writing ๐Ÿ”น Word Work ๐Ÿ”น

During this time, teachers are working with students individually and in small groups.

Below, you will find some details about what each component of the Literacy Block includes.

Reading

๐Ÿ”น Read to Self ๐Ÿ”น Read to Someone ๐Ÿ”น Listen to Reading ๐Ÿ”น

Read Alouds are an important part of each day at school across many subject areas!

Learners participate in a 40 Book Challenge during our Literacy Block!

This encourages them to explore a variety of genres of books, reflect on what they read and feel pride in their accomplishment!

We learn about the various genres and students track their progress using beads.

During whole group, small group and individual instruction, we work on strengthening writing traits.

Writing

At the end of each month, students write an entry in their Home Journal.

This journal gets sent home for families to read and respond to.

It is a great way to bring our learning home, and see student's writing progress throughout the year.
