English as an Additional Language Instruction at St. Peter's Junior High in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland and Labrador
English as an Additional Language (EAL) Overview
The EAL program is intended for students who do not speak English at home and require English language instruction in order to successfully complete the prescribed curriculum. The EAL curriculum provides instruction in the strand headings of Listening and Speaking, Reading and Viewing, and Writing and Representing. These strands are integrated and connected to the prescribed curriculum. EAL instruction is determined according to the English proficiency level and other relevant aspects of the student’s learning profile.
St. Peter's Junior High currently offers two courses for English language learners (ELLs): EAL for the Intermediate School 1 and EAL for the Intermediate School 2. Students attend EAL classes daily, which helps students build their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills effectively throughout the school year. More information on these two courses is below. More advanced ELLs continue to receive pull-out instruction and support to ensure their success.
EAL for the Intermediate School 1 is a beginner-level language arts course for EAL students in junior high. This course is appropriate for students who have at least a transitional literacy level in another language or in English. The course helps students acquire language skills and strategies for listening, speaking, reading and writing.
EAL for the Intermediate School 2 is an academic English course for students with mid-level (i.e. intermediate) English proficiency. Students in EAL for the Intermediate School 2 would normally have completed EAL for the Intermediate School 1 or equivalent. The course helps students develop language skills and strategies for listening, speaking, reading and writing.

The Teacher
My name is Ms. Rachel Huys. I have been teaching EAL for three years. Prior to teaching EAL, I taught music both privately and in the K-12 education system.
I spent many years of my life performing in theatre and opera, which was my first true love. Born in Ontario, I now live in St. John's with my small, sweet family.
