School counselors provide counseling services to help students meet their academic, social, personal, and postsecondary goals. While school counselors are not long-term counseling or therapy providers, they do provide a variety of services to help students succeed in the school environment. New Kent Middle School's School Counselors move up with their group of students from sixth through eighth grade, providing students with consistency and care as they progress through middle school.
We teach monthly classroom lessons on a wide range of topics, including but not limited to academic and career planning, bullying prevention, stress management, and goal setting. We utilize the American School Counseling Association's Student Standards and the Standards for School Counseling Programs in Virginia Public Schools in forming our classroom lessons.
We offer small group counseling at various times throughout the year, covering common topics like stress and anxiety, academic skills, and friendship skills. We also offer mediation to support students' conflict resolution skills.
We offer short-term individual counseling on an as-needed basis for social/emotional concerns that impact students' success in school, such as grief, anxiety, and anger. For needs that extend beyond the scope of the school counseling program, referrals to community based mental health providers are provided.
Our school counseling program offers resources and support to students as they seek to be enrolled, enlisted, or employed after graduating high school. All 8th grade students develop personalized Academic and Career Plans during their fall semester based on college/career research during their 6th and 7th grade years, which pave the way to success during high school. We also provide information to students and parents interested in Maggie L. Walker Governor's School and/or CodeRVA Regional High School.
We partner with students, teachers, administrators, and community agencies and provide consultation services to promote student success and wellbeing. We also refer families to helpful resources in the community when it is in the student's best interest.
Our school counselors are uniquely trained and equipped to support students experiencing trauma and/or crisis. We offer wrap-around services to help support the safety and wellbeing of our students both inside and outside of school.
New Kent Middle School school counselors help coordinate a variety of programs and services to help support rising 6th grade students as well as rising 9th grade students as they prepare to attend a new school.
