Structured Literacy

Structured Literacy is explicit, systematic teaching that focuses on phonemic awareness, phonics, syllabication, syntax, morphology, semantics, and comprehension. This term was originally used by the International Dyslexia Association as a way to help students with dyslexia. We now have substantial evidence that it is effective for all readers

Phonemic awareness is a subset of phonological awareness in which listeners are able to hear, identify and manipulate phonemes.
Phonics is correlating sounds with letters or groups of letters in an alphabetic writing system.
Syllabication is the act, process, or method of forming or dividing words into syllables
Syntax is the set of rules, principles, and processes that govern the structure of sentences and phrases.
Morphology is the study of words, how they are formed, and their relationship to other words.
Semantics is the meanings of words and phrases in a particular context.
Reading comprehension is the ability to process text, understand its meaning, and to integrate it with what the reader already knows.
