Maker Space

Maker Space Use Policy

The Maker Space is a shared space for library patrons to access tools that support STEM skills, collaborative learning, making, and creating. Makers must be current NJWTPL cardholders to use any equipment in the Maker Space room.

Safety

Some Maker Space equipment requires training before use. This equipment will be missing an essential component that will be available at the front desk for checkout once training is complete and a waiver is signed. Patrons 14 and up may complete the training. A minor’s waiver must be signed by a parent or guardian. Children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

  1. Equipment must be used in a safe and proper manner, and you must follow the safety guidelines for the product.

  2. Safety gear must be worn as appropriate.

  3. Long hair, necklaces, loose clothing, and the like must be removed or safely secured and out of the way.

  4. If any tool becomes unsafe or damaged, staff must be notified.

General Use

  1. Tools and equipment are available to makers on a first-come, first-served basis.

  2. The maker must return tools used in the space to their original location in a clean state. The workspace is to be cleaned before the maker leaves.

  3. NJWTPL does not accept responsibility if a project is destroyed, does not print correctly, or does not work.

  4. Only library computers may be connected to library machines.

  5. Food and drinks are not permitted.

  6. NJWTPL’s Code of Conduct and Internet Use Policy apply.

  7. Projects are not to be saved to library computers.

Maker Space users must not create anything that is:

  1. prohibited by local, state, or federal law;

  2. unsafe, harmful, or dangerous, including weapons;

  3. obscene or otherwise inappropriate for the library environment; or

  4. in violation of another’s intellectual property rights. (For example, 3D printers will not be used to reproduce material that is subject to copyright, patent, or trademark protection.)

Charges

There is no charge to use Maker Space equipment. Some library materials used in Maker Space projects do have a fee. The Library does not provide all materials for your projects. For the cost of materials provided by the library see Library Fee Schedule.
