APEX PHYSICAL SCIENCE - Physical Science - Physical Science offers a focused curriculum designed around the understanding of critical physical science concepts, including the nature and structure of matter, the characteristics of energy, and the mastery of critical scientific skills. Course topics include an introduction to kinematics, including gravity and two-dimensional motion; force; momentum; waves; electricity; atoms; the periodic table of elements; molecular bonding; chemical reactivity; gases; and an introduction to nuclear energy.
LIFE SCIENCE (Book) - Life Science - This course will introduce the student to a broad range of biological methods and concepts, including the scientific method, very basic chemistry for biology, cell processes, classification, disease, life processes of plants and animals, the human body, development and heredity, natural selection and ecology.
EARTH SCIENCE (Book) - Earth Science - This course will introduce the student to a broad range of topics in Earth Science, including geology, meteorology, oceanography, biogeochemical cycles, and astronomy.
APEX EARTH SCIENCE (P) - Physical Science - Earth Science offers a focused curriculum that explores Earth's composition, structure, processes, and history; its atmosphere, freshwater, and oceans; and its environment in space. Course topics include an exploration of the major cycles that affect every aspect of life, including weather, climate, air movement, tectonics, volcanic eruptions, rocks, minerals, geologic history, Earth's environment, sustainability, and energy resources.
APEX THE LIVING EARTH (P) - Integrated Science - The Living Earth integrates biology with Earth and space science. Throughout the course, students apply fundamental biological concepts to better understand how living systems and Earth's systems are interrelated and interdependent. Course topics include structure and function of living organisms, heredity, genetic variation, natural selection, evolution, the biosphere, types of ecosystems and biomes, the ecology of populations and communities, the effects of change on the biosphere and its parts, the relationship of humans with the environment, and explorations of challenges humans face and sustainable solutions for the future health of Earth and its inhabitants.
Area D for university entrance pathway 3rd and 4th-year options.
APEX ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES (P) - Integrated Science- This class is an integrated college prep science thus it can fulfill the life or physical science requirement for graduation- Environmental Science explores the biological, physical, and sociological principles related to the environment in which organisms live on Earth, the biosphere. Course topics include natural systems on Earth, biogeochemical cycles, the nature of matter and energy, the flow of matter and energy through living systems, populations, communities, ecosystems, ecological pyramids, renewable and non-renewable natural resources, land use, biodiversity, pollution, conservation, sustainability, and human impacts on the environment. For the area "D" science requirement, one year of college prep science must be completed prior to this course.
APEX CHEMISTRY IN THE EARTH SYSTEM (P) - Chemistry/Earth Science - Chemistry in the Earth System integrates chemistry with biology and Earth science. Throughout the course, students apply fundamental chemistry concepts to better understand how matter and energy interact in the natural and designed world, how human activities impact Earth's systems, and how science can be used to develop new technologies and engineering solutions.
APEX PHYSICS AND THE UNIVERSE (P) - Physics/Earth Science - Physics of the Universe integrates physics with Earth and space science. Throughout the course, students apply fundamental physics concepts to better understand the impact of human activities on Earth's systems and how forces, energy, and matter interact throughout the universe.
More options for area D sciences may be accomplished via dual schedule with one of the NJUHSD comprehensive high schools or academic enrichment via a community college such as Sierra Community College or Yuba Community College. See the NPA counselor for guidance.
