College Essay

Many private colleges require a personal statement/college essay. The University of California requires four Personal Insight Questions (PIQ's). Letters of Recommendation

Letters of recommendation are required for the following:

  • District Scholarship Application (2 individuals who know you well)

  • Cal State EOP Application (2 recommenders who know you well - not family members)

  • Private college applications (1-2 teachers + your school counselor)

Be sure to complete the appropriate forms below to assist your recommenders with the letter writing process.

Make a copy of the document(s), complete them and share them directly with your recommenders. Tips for completing these documents. Be sure to watch the video "Inviting Recommenders" when applying using the Common Application.

Demonstrating Interest...

“Demonstrated interest” in a college involves showing a college that you’re interested in them. This goes beyond simply submitting an application. About 50% of colleges consider demonstrated interest when admitting students. They are more likely to admit students who show that they want to attend! Here are some ways to show demonstrated interest:

  • Submit any available supplemental essays

  • Visit campus

  • Schedule an interview. Watch this video and review these tips.

  • College fair (be sure to pick up the representative’s business card!)

  • Send a thank you note after meeting with a representative. Include 1-2 features of the college that interest you.

  • Request college information

  • Apply Early Decision (only if a school is your clear first choice!)
