Course Description
The NU Theatre Program offers courses designed to equip students with a solid understanding of the theatrical process in an atmosphere valuing individual growth. Students learn to work cooperatively as members of an ensemble, to appreciate the many arts of the theatre, and to focus their creative energies. While the training is geared toward students at all levels of experience, theatre is approached as a serious art form demanding commitment and dedication.
BEGINNING DRAMA – Grades 9-12 (2-semester course)
Beginning Drama is an activities-based acting class, which will focus on the fundamentals of public performance. Although the course’s emphasis will be on acting, it is important to note that the skills learned will easily transfer to any arena where public speaking and interaction is required. Fundamental skills include, but are not limited to: Relaxation, Concentration, Observation, Imagination, Building Environment, Physical/Vocal/Emotional Characterization, Improvisation, Scene Performance, Monologue Performance, Shakespearean Performance, and Critical Analysis of Others’ Performances.

will understand and be able to demonstrate proficiency in the creation of a believable environment in performance.

will understand and be able to demonstrate proficiency in the spontaneous creation of an improvised performance.
will understand and be able to demonstrate proficiency in the creation of a two-person scene performance.
will understand and be able to demonstrate proficiency in the creation of a monologue performance
will understand and be able to demonstrate proficiency in the creation of a Shakespearean performance
will understand and be able to demonstrate proficiency in critically assessing and deriving meaning from live performances through descriptive analysis.
will understand and be able to demonstrate proficiency in working independently and collaboratively in performance
will demonstrate development in SEL competencies in self and social awareness, self-management, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making in rehearsal and daily activities.
