Deborah Lee began playing ultimate in 1998. She started at Georgia Tech Rowing, where for 6 of 7 days, she had crew practice, and the 7th day, the team played frisbee, which was "so much better than the other six days"! So she helped start the women’s ultimate team at Georgia Tech! In 2010, she coached as a mixed team captain for the Albany Ultimate Disc Association (AUDA) and created/coached the women’s group. She is an engineering technology teacher at Iroquois Middle School. Besides teaching and frisbee, she loves to hike and get outside. Her husband is a photographer, so she enjoys getting out and finding cool things to see!
Favorite throw: "A long OI forehand, like beating a zone deep. The big curvy one down the field."
Favorite position: " I like setting the stack. I am able to handle, but also cut and move around, organize the field, and help out when needed. "
Favorite aspect of the sport: " Definitely the spirit of the game. It’s not brutal. It’s not a winner take all everytime. Everyone's having fun together in this competitive, fast-paced environment we call ultimate frisbee. "
Fun fact!
" I grew up on a lake in South Carolina and we water skied, but I could never get up out of the water. I failed, and I failed again. My cousins did it flawlessly. So when I was 18, after years of failing, my mother had enough and signed me up for a water ski lesson. I got in the water and finally skied! That’s just an interesting challenge/lesson that I learned from. "
Any advice?
" I’m not sure you’re aware about how special this group is, we have to keep it going. We have to grow it. And our members are going to go somewhere else and find another community. We’re building in a way to meet people and have friends for life. It’s not obvious during practice, but this community provides that. "
Jonathan Adams began playing ultimate in his freshman year of college. He tells a story when, “ the teachers had students leave their dorm doors open to 'meet new people.' One day, a girl ran down the hallway, yelling to everyone to join ultimate frisbee, so I decided to try it out!” He enjoyed it and kept playing! He works at GE as a wind turbine product manager, also specializing in software that manages the turbines. In his spare time, he enjoys doing jigsaw and logic puzzles, traveling, and biking with Coach Christine.

Favorite aspect of the sport: " The strategy, where the team can set up advanced offense/defense."

Favorite aspect of the sport: "The unique aspect of self-officiation separates ultimate from other sports and consequently makes it a very welcoming and spirited community."
Fun fact: "Ultimate is the only sport that requires two people, a thrower and a catcher, to score!"
Anything to share with the team? "Even after playing for several years, I'm still learning as a coach, learning how to help effectively. I'm working to develop the awareness of the sport and Niskayuna is doing a great job of that. Seeing and being part of the growth of the Niskayuna team has, ultimately, pun intended, been really rewarding."
Andrew Nordell began casually playing in 4th grade and captained his high school team. After high school, he played for Union College in Schenectady NY and went to the National Ultimate Training Camp (NUTC). He is currently working on his Masters’ Degree and is employed at GE.
