Hydrogen Bonding that Turns the DNA and Folds the Protein: A Spectroscopist's Delight
Abstract: Since its inception in 1919 by an undergraduate student, Maurice Huggins, Hydrogen Bonding has been a mystery for many researchers. The concern raised by Maurice's teacher William Bray "there are several interesting ideas in this paper, but there is one you’ll never get chemists to believe: the idea that a hydrogen atom can be bonded two other atoms at the same time” still dribbles not only in the mind of chemists but also physicists and biologists. The voyage of this fundamental concept in chemistry is incomplete ... read more

NISER study aces ‘impossible’ chemical physics experiment
BHUBANESWAR: A research team of National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), Bhubaneswar, has discovered the strength of hydrogen in the context of its bond with polonium by using high-level quantum mechanical calculations. The research showed that hydrogen can establish bond with polonium, which was perceived impossible in the fundamental concept of electronegativity........read more

Polonium is a naturally occurring radioactive element and its compounds engage in soil, marine and environmental chemistry. With Russia curtailing gas supplies to Europe, fracking for shale gas looks set to increase. Fracking could cause the release of polonium compounds into our atmosphere, such as Me2Po, which is produced by aerobic marine microorganisms. Increasing awareness of how such compounds could impact environmental and marine chemistry is therefore important........read more

Dr. Himansu S. Biswal featured in The Journal of Physical Chemistry virtual special issue “Young Scientists”.
"This Virtual Special Issue presents 82 papers in The Journal of Physical Chemistry A, B and C authored by young scientists in physical chemistry and related fields from around the world. We are delighted that these authors have chosen to participate in this issue. These have been divided according the journal parts A, B, and C, but as usual the papers often cover topics that are relevant for more than one part, which is why we decided to have one Virtual Special Issue for the three parts. The topics of these papers are in many respects a celebration of the diversity of science that is represented in physical chemistry today.
