Lightspeed Parent Portal is now available!
Lightspeed Parent Portal is a family tool that prioritizes visibility and choice for families.
The Parent Portal gives parents visibility into all browsing activity on the Chromebook, which includes activity both in school and at home.
When at home, parents have additional control over what students can and can't access.
You will automatically get a weekly email on Monday mornings sent from do_not_reply@lightspeedsystems.com; you will receive 1 email per student.
Here you will find an overview of that week's online activity.
Optional Action Needed: To see more details about this browsing activity and gain additional parental control options, click the button at the bottom of the email to "Log in or Register"
Navigate to https://northwest-independent.portal.relay.school/ to access your Parent Portal login page.
Click the 2nd tab to "Create Account"
To connect you to your student's account, you must use the email address that NISD has on file for you already from registration. This will be the same email address that:
ParentSquare notifications go to
Your weekly Lightspeed Student Online Activity Reports are sent to
Choose a password to use, and then enter it again to confirm it. Then, "Create your account."
Website blocks do not always mean troublesome activities.
Ads may display as an embed within a Chrome window and our filter automatically blocks these.
Sites due to unallowed categories in our filter, such as Social Media, will be blocked.
Access intentionally restricted as part of the Technology Safeguards will be blocked; for example, YouTube is blocked for student-led use at Elementary.
Some URLs will appear as names other than what you may be more familiar with hearing them called.
launchpad.classlink.com = this is our single-sign-on Portal; once students sign into their device, they can access sites they need through the Portal wihtout needing individual log in credentials for each site.
nisdtx.instructure.com = Instructure is the parent company for Canvas which is our required Learning Management System for secondary with optional use at elementary.
We invite you to explore this page of Instructional Technology tools which are district-adopted sites and have some of the most widespread use.
Your student's browsing activity will likely also show access to sites that aren't showcased on this list. These may be unique sites that are curriculum-specific or may be a tool that isn't widely adopted that a teacher has included in their lesson design.
You should be able to see the URL to the specific site that was accessed by your students. If the URL is open to public viewing, you will be able to click on it to explore the specific site that was browsed.
Resources from Google Workspace (docs.google.com, slides.google.com, etc.) automatically start as a private file that only the document owner can see. It may be shared to only "NISD" which means that only staff and students can view it.
Rostered resources, such as digital textbooks, require log in to view as part of a purchased subscription. These would be accessible to your student who has that rostered access, but are intentionally not publicly available by the vendor.
While your Parent Portal does not allow you to view more than the last 7 days of history, you can request browsing history for a specific time period from your student's campus administrator.
No. The Lightspeed Parent Portal shows when your child’s device accessed a website, but it does not measure how long your child was actively looking at or working on a specific page. For example, a website may remain open in a tab while your child is working somewhere else, so the activity shown in the portal should be viewed as a record of websites accessed rather than an exact measure of time spent on each site.
Teachers have access to Lightspeed Classroom. When they start a class in Lightspeed Classroom, they have access to view students' live web activity including the ability to monitor the currently opened tab and see other open tabs. They can also see historical browsing activity for students during their class period for any times when they had launched Lightspeed Classroom.
Administrators can view all student browsing history, including in school and at home use, through Lightspeed Filter.
The Chromebook is a filtered device that exceeds CIPA compliance. This same filtering happens when at school and at home. If you choose to do so, you can block additional categories and sites as well as make additional allowals. These only take effect outside of school hours.
Parents have control over their student's device during out of school hours, specifically starting 15 min after school ends and automatically inactivating 15 min before school starts.
Changes made to Web Rules or Schedules take 5-15 minutes to update. Restarting the device forces it to check for an update if the change in access needs to be more immediate.
Since Parent Portal allows access to set schedules and web rules 15 minutes after the school day ends, these may conflict wtih access that is needed outside of school hours during tutorials. Since the parent controls the device during after school hours, the teacher cannot override your parental controls for tutorial purposes. Please disable or postpone conflicting web rules (ex. pause internet) when your student's device will be needed for outside-of-school support.
Web rules can be set to recur based on a schedule.
For example, Focus Time can be used to limit districtions during homework, and Bedtime hours can be set to block browsing during the hours you set.
Example of a Bedtime schedule:
When creating a new schedule, there are two tabs:
Within the Schedule tab, you can name the schedule, set the start to end time, and select the days that the schedule repeats.
Within the Web Rules tab, you will have various options depending on the type of Schedule you chose from the main menu. In this bedtime example, the only control is to disable all web-browsing during the times selected.
As applicable, you are encouraged to get more information from your student first to better understand the context.
Reach out to your student's teacher or campus administrator as we partner together to support your student's digital decision-making.
This email will be sent to the email address that NISD has on file for Guardian 1 and Guardian 2 from registration. This will be the same email address that ParentSquare notifications go to. If you have verified you are accessing the correct inbox but still can't locate the email, check your spam/junk inboxes. If located in spam/junk, add "do_not_reply@lightspeedsystems.com" to your email contacts to whitelist emails from this account.
Log into your existing Lightspeed Parent Portal dashboard.
Click on your profile name located in the bottom-left corner of the navigation pane.
Select "Subscribe to weekly email" from the drop-down menu.
If a child is missing from the list, contact your school campus to verify that your guardian email address matches across all student profiles.
Yes. CIPA-compliant web filtering is embedded directly on the NISD-issued Chromebook itself. Whether the device connects to home Wi-Fi, a public library network, or a mobile cellular hotspot, district baseline filtering protections and your custom after-school parent rules remain enforced.
No. Lightspeed operates exclusively on NISD-owned, district-issued devices assigned to your student. It does not monitor, filter, or inspect traffic on your personal family computers, personal cell phones, or smart home devices. Filtering software resides strictly on the school device, ensuring CIPA-compliant web protection wherever the Chromebook connects to the internet.
Lightspeed doesn't have an actual app, but you are able to create a similar app experience through the following:
OS Safari Configuration: Open the Parent Portal URL in Safari, tap the Share button at the bottom of the screen, scroll down and select Add to Home Screen, then tap 'Add' in the top-right corner.
Android Chrome Configuration: Open the Parent Portal URL in Chrome, tap the Three Dots menu icon in the top-right corner, select Add to Home Screen, and tap 'Add' to confirm.
