Attendance Facts

Texas laws are more focused than ever on ensuring their youth are attending school. Why?

Research shows that absences have a negative affect on students:

• Students who are chronically absent in Pre-K, Kindergarten, and 1st grade have significantly lower scores on oral reading fluency. (Lower Literacy Levels)
• Students who are chronically absent may experience lower social-emotional outcomes.
• Attendance in 8th grade is the best predictor of high school grades, even more than 8th grade grades and test scores!
• Absences lead to an increased risk of falling behind in high school.
• In high school, good attendance is associated with positive study habits and characteristics of persistence, where as poor attendance is linked to discipline problems, suspensions, and an increased risk of dropping-out.
