WHAT IS Destination Imagination? Destination Imagination (DI) is an international non-profit organization that teaches life skills and expands imaginations through youth-centered, team-based creative problem solving.
WHO MANAGES A TEAM? Parent volunteers are needed for managing a team. The team manager oversees the team and acts as a guide throughout the process. A team cannot be created without parent volunteers!
WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO JOIN? K-2 participates in the Early Learning Program (non-competitive). 3rd-12th participates in Destination Imagination (competitive). Up to 7 members are allowed on a team.
WHAT DOES A TEAM DO? Teams of 2-7 students work together after school during the year to solve their challenge. The team will also practice instant challenges. They will then present the solution to their team challenge and also solve an instant challenge at the Regional Tournament.
HOW OFTEN DO TEAMS MEET? Once a team is formed, the members will decide how competitive they want to be and how often they want to meet. Typically, teams meet once a week until January when they then practice two times per week, and possibly more as the Regional Tournament approaches.
Teams will solve a team challenge (long term) and an instant challenge (short term) to be presented at the regional tournament.
Team Challenge
Each team selects one new and engaging Team Challenge requiring a solution that will be presented at the tournament. Team Challenges encourage students to explore their passions, discover their unique talents and abilities, and learn new skills. Team Challenges are available each year in the following categories: Technical, Scientific, Fine Arts, Improvisational, Engineering, Service Learning, and Early Learning. Although each Team Challenge has a specific educational focus, they each also incorporate elements to make them truly multi-disciplinary and cross-curricular (i.e., the Fine Arts Challenge will have a technical element and the Engineering Challenge will have an artistic or storytelling component.) Team Challenges are limited to an 8 minute performance.

Instant Challenge
Instant Challenges are quick creative and critical-thinking exercises that build teamwork and reinforce problem-solving skills like rapid ideation and implementation. Instant Challenges can be task-based, performance-based, or a combination of both. All teams practice Instant Challenges during the year and are given one at the tournament. Instant Challenges are also usually limited to 8 minutes. Parents are not allowed to watch instant challenges.
